This year has probably had a BIG toll on your creativity. Most of our listeners are creative entrepreneurs in some regard. When you are getting paid to be creative it can be so easy to fall into creative ruts. The thing you once LOVED doing can start to feel like a chore. We know we aren’t the only ones feeling it. We wanted to give you a little refresh today on the podcast to help you get out of any creative rut you’re feeling stuck in. Creativity is a HUGE blessing. We were BORN to be creative no matter what job or career we have.
If you’re feeling all in the blaaahhhsss when it comes to feeling creatively rejuvenated, this episode is going to be a nice big dose of creative medicine.
You were created to create no matter what career path you are on. Creativity is such an incredible gift and it is so important that we utilize it. Creativity makes itself known in so many different ways.
1. TAKE A BREAK
Take the pressure off. When you’re constantly feeling the pressure to DO DO DO and CREATE CREATE CREATE, it’s easy to feel stuck and that you are “failing” over and over. This drains your creative battery DRY. If you are getting paid to create something, it can be easy to feel that the creativity and fun is getting sucked out of it.
Sometimes the best thing to do is to take a step back and actually take a break. So stop. Turn your car entirely off and give yourself time to let your battery recharge. You can’t power an entire vehicle from a dead battery. As business owners and creatives, it’s so important to give ourselves time to allow our batteries to recharge.
Some of the most refreshing times in our lives have been when we’ve shut off everything and taken a breather. Sometimes a simple “stop, pause, rest, and restart” are all that’s necessary!
Rest is not a luxury. Rest is productivity. When you pause and recharge, you are giving yourself the energy and fuel needed to kick butt.
2. DO SOMETHING THAT CREATIVELY INSPIRES YOU
Go to the beach. Go for a hike. Talk to a friend who always sparks ideas in you. Go for a drive.
Pay attention to the places and times when you feel the MOST inspired. You can do this retroactively by thinking back to times when your best ideas came to you. Write those times down. Any correlations?
Do you get ideas/feel inspired when exploring new places? Take a day trip somewhere close by.
Do you feel inspired when in nature? UNPLUG AND GET OUTSIDE.
Do you feel inspired while talking to friends, reading a book, or driving in the car?? Pay attention to those times and then UTILIZE THEM!
3. CREATE JUST FOR YOU (NOT PAID FOR A CUSTOMER/CLIENT)
It’s easy to get stuck when you’re JUST being creative for your job, for paid clients.
If you’re feeling stuck, take time to create for NO ONE except yourself. It allows you to try new things, get weird, get funky, and learn new skills within your art. It gives you space to fail with zero pressure to deliver it to a client/customer.
No matter what creative service you are a part of, take the space to ask someone if you can create something for them. Don’t be afraid to ask a friend if you can create with them and for them. This can help spark some creative freedoms.
4. EXPERIMENT WITH SOMETHING COMPLETELY NEW
Try a hobby or creative skill you’ve never done before just to refresh your creative juices. Try painting, gardening, photography, writing, cooking, designing, hand lettering, watercolor, drawing, knitting, jewelry making, or macrame creating!
Do something that you have never done before! Not only will it release the creative juices in your brain, but trying something new or putting yourself in a brand new creative space will help unlock creative potential in the art you normally do.
We ALL get in creative ruts. This is especially true as creative entrepreneurs where so much of our life depends on creating. It’s easy to get creatively burnt out. Learning how to manage our creativity, protect it, nurture it, and jumpstart it when it’s getting low is critical to our success and our happiness. Don’t be afraid to admit that you’re feeling creatively drained. Be very intentional to stop and recharge when you’re feeling that!
