On today’s episode Heart & Hustle meets Hustle & Flow! Brittani Hon is one half of The Hons, with her husband Jon. Together they have documented high end luxury engagements and weddings since 2012. They’ve been married for 5 years and have the cutest little girl named Pepper. As they grew their wedding photography business, they looked around at what was being taught business wise in this industry, and were tired of all the fluff. Inspirational stuff just wasn’t cutting it, and they had a passion to teach and educate other entrepreneurs. They started applying to be speakers and kept getting turned down because they weren’t “Instagram famous.” They decided to take matters into their own hands. In 2016, they officially started their business and photography workshop, Hustle & Flow. Brittani now teaches photographers, entrepreneurs, and business owners crucial business strategies and what REALLY matters when it comes to making money. Hustle & Flow is now one of the top workshops in the wedding business industry, changing students lives left and right.
It was so refreshing to sit down with Brittani and chat all about the perceived competition in the educator industry, the stigma and hard work that comes with being a leader and educator, money mindset and how to have a healthy outlook on money, getting over the fear of failure and just going for it, and so much more. Brittani brought all of her sass and fire.
Brittani and Jon became wedding photographers in 2012 and went into it blindly. They decided to put up a few Google Ads for and ended up booking 65 weddings. The dove right in, and fell in love with wedding photography together.
A couple of years in, they began to make friends with other photographers and noticed that they were struggling with booking. Jon and Brittani started offering advice on how they market and brand themselves. All of their friends began to make a lot of money and book weddings left and right, accrediting their success to the Hons.
They then began to start mentoring people which led to their workshops and Hustle and Flow.
Jon and Brittani fell into each thing from the beginning. Jon runs an e-commerce online workshop where he teaches people how to choose products and launch to have passive income. One of Jon’s side hustles made just shy of $300,000 last year by applying the Hustle and Flow method: branding, advertising, retargeting ads. They realized they should start teaching this.
When people start booking you it is a high. You are so excited that people like what you have to offer and the ideas start to flow. You start to realize that if you can do this about wedding photography, you can also do this for a product you are passionate about.
Anytime Brittani and Jon had an idea, they just went for it. Don’t overthink it. If you wait for it to be perfect, you’ll never do it.
You can’t be embarrassed to fail. You have to put yourself out there and try. People will respect that so much more than the “fake it until you make it” route.
Most people nowadays just appreciate when you try and are honest.
Jon and Brittani launched their first ever Hustle and Flow Retreat and it failed. Only 30 tickets were sold when they were predicting 300. Brittani went on Instagram stories and admitted that she failed for the Hustle and Flow Retreat. She admitted to not marketing it and relying too heavily on the brand of the Hustle and Flow Workshop. At the end of the day the retreat was a new avenue and she needed to focus on selling it as much as she did the workshop. She admitted on her Instagram stories that she got egotistical.
She decided to rebrand and remarket the retreat and had a month to sell it as Impact Wedding Summit. Brittani got more clarity on what the purpose and intention behind Impact Wedding Summit and sold 200 spots in one month. A lot of those people shared that by seeing Brittani go on Instagram and talk about how she failed miserably made them want to buy a ticket.
If Brittani let failure get in the way, she would have never sold it out and would have been in the hole 100K. It ended up being one heck of an amazing event and it wouldn’t have happened if Brittani let fear of failure get in the way.
Impact Wedding Summit is hosted by Hustle and Flow but is a completely different brand. Hustle and Flow is a business, tough love, workshop, but Impact Wedding Summit serves a purpose for the whole of the industry, not just photographers. It’s about actual community and learning from other experts in the industry.
As long as you care about people and are giving valuable and actionable information, that is what matters to be an educator.
Brittani still goes through money struggles mentally. Every month Brittani has to make sure she is making enough money each month for her HQ, bills, etc.
When you are spending money as an investment, no matter what the amount, it is still an investment.
Growing up, Brittani’s parents were constantly telling her to be a good steward of her money, don’t overspend, have savings for a rainy day, etc. Their intention was good, but what they didn’t teach is having confidence while still being a good steward of her money. Being a good steward of money isn’t just saving for a rainy day. If you think about it, that’s actually negative. It’s the mindset that if something bad happens, you have money. Often when we spend money we feel guilty and feel as if we should be saving it.
Brittani has learned that money is like a relationship. Think about it, are you not going to go all in with your heart because you don’t want to get heartbroken? Who thinks like that?!
It’s the same with money. If you aren’t going to spend money and only save it for a rainy day, you might find yourself stuck in a job or life that you aren’t happy in because you are saving it all. You have to be in a relationship with money like you are with a partner. If you treat your partner in a way of suffocating them, you would lose your partner. It’s the same with money. If you hold on to it, never spend it, never invest it, and are always scared that it is going to leave you what ends up happening? You’re still broke. It’s the scarcity mindset.
It is not an easy mindset to break. Brittani still fights this every day.
Scared money don’t make money. You have to spend money to make money.
Make a decision with the little money that you have to do something big for your business. If there is a workshop or education course that you know will better you and your business and it scares you to spend money on it, spend money on it. The only way to break the fear is to take action on it.
The fear doesn’t go away if your savings get bigger. The fear gets bigger too. You have to start working on money mindset now. Another piece of advice is to be good to your money. Whether it is $15 or $1500. All money is good money. Be thankful for every dollar you have. You’ve got to get to a place of thankfulness that you have a job that pays you.
Treat your money nicely. Stop comparing your money to someone else’s money. Stop comparing your success to someone else’s success.
Brittani is definitely a “tell it like it is” type of girl. Because of this, some people are actually intimidated by her before they even meet.
The first couple of years, Brittani was offended that people would judge her. In 2019, Brittani began to understand people from their lens. She realized she lacked tact and compassion, so she made it a point to still be herself but to be a little kinder and a little softer. She is still known as tough and honest, but a lot of Hustle and Flow alumni have told her that she has shown her heart. No matter how tough or how sweet you are, all of us can embrace being more vulnerable.
Instead of getting defensive, Brittani decided to take on the vulnerability card. If you truly care about people you will do what you have to do to meet them where they are at. Not everyone was ready for tough love Brittani all the time. Now she chooses when to be a little tougher and when to be a little softer.
Vulnerability is the real tough.
People think you have to change who you are to be a better version of themselves. But, you actually don’t. You can still be the core of who you are.
For anyone wanting to get into education because you think the money is baller, you are highly mistaken. Yes, the money is there. But you have to show up for people for money to continue to be there. Brittani is so involved with every single person that attends a workshop. Brittani does a live video weekly, she is in the Facebook group daily, she spends time coming up with content. People need to know that the first ten workshops that Brittani and Jon launched, they did not profit at all. They made zero profit. They were okay with that because they were watching people’s success grow rapidly. You have to be willing to be in this even if you don’t get paid. That is how you know if you should be an educator.
Brittani will show up for her attendees. She will put her money where her mouth is.If you want to be an educator, put your money where your mouth is.
Treat people well and they will keep showing up for you.
Don’t let it consume you to the point that you lose focus on yourself and family time. Brittani is all for the hustle but not at the cost of your marriage, your relationship with your family, your relationship with your kids.
Yes, work your ass off, do the hustle, but you don’t have to work at 2am. Go to bed with your partner. That email can wait until 7am.
Systemize your business. Your business is a reflection of you, so take care of you.
