If you’ve been considering becoming a mentor or coach and you’re wondering: ‘Am I ready?! Should I do it?!’. This will help you know if you’re ready, what to be prepared for, and more.
If you’ve ever felt, thought, or imagined these questions, keep reading:
‘Oh, I have nothing to offer’ or,
‘Man I should get into education that’s where all the money’s at’ and,
‘What does education even mean or look like?!’
These are questions you should ask yourself to see if you are ready to start educating others.
This is the mental block that comes with starting to do mentor sessions or coaching in your business. When we say coaching, we don’t just mean business coaching. It could be coaching on anything that you do and are an expert at. As much as you may sometimes feel like you know or have nothing to offer, we guarantee you have more than you realize. A great way to judge this is to pay attention to whether or not people are asking you questions and if you have answers.
It doesn’t matter what level you are at, whether you’re at the intermediate level teaching a brand new beginner the first few steps OR you’re years in teaching high-level people how to go even further, it doesn’t matter what level you are at. We guarantee that you do have something to offer BUT, that doesn’t necessarily mean you SHOULD go into education (mentoring, coaching, etc!). Just because you have something to offer doesn’t always mean it’s the right fit. So the next question to ask yourself is:
It is twofold and goes so well with the first question on if you have what other people need, if yes awesome! Then what is your purpose with coaching or helping other people? If you are SO PASSIONATE TO HELP OTHER PEOPLE YOU COULD BURST?!??! You want to see other people succeed: your success is their success. That’s where you want to be.
If your goal is solely money, definitely reconsider. In business and getting into education/coaching, people notice there is potential scalability which can often come with lots of money. There is potential to scale your business financially that is lucrative, but doing something ONLY for money usually ends up in a mess.
Your mindset behind what you do in business, in every business, not just education has to be more than just making money. You should be a profitable business, yes. But if you are a profitable business that isn’t serving people or impacting people, you’re probably not going to last. It’s not sustainable for you or your clients. You’re going to get burnt and it will come back to bite you. There is nothing wrong with making money but especially in the service-based business of education; it is all about serving and giving.
So if you are in it to receive and take, whether that is money or reputation, you are in it for the wrong reason, and not only will it hurt your clients but it will come back to bite you. People always know when someone is being fake and greedy.
Do not get into education if you are in it for yourself and the money. Don’t do it because you think you will make money, but do it because you have a heart to make people’s lives better with what you are teaching.
There is this fad or pressure in a lot of service-based industries now that the next step in your career is to get into education. It’s almost become the cycle of how you do business. There’s nothing wrong with those steps because we took those steps, but it’s become the expected progression and that needs to stop. There are ways to scale, diversify and make more money without getting into education. We don’t think that should be the natural progression next step for service-based business owners.
Education isn’t for everyone and that needs to stop being an industry expectation that you HAVE to get into education.
With education being the next step, people start without asking the above questions and that’s where unmet expectations fall. That’s when they don’t realize the work. If you are willing to teach people, you have to back that up with results. Care for people, again they can feel sliminess to push sales and then disappear. People will feel that. It takes a lot of work and a LOT of responsibility that comes with becoming a leader/educator. Are you ready to take it?!
It’s all a learning curve. We are still learning. You do have to be willing to take that responsibility of being in that authority position. Being a leader or an educator you are responsible for your client’s success, for their investment, for yourself and your learning.
Are you willing to put in the blood, sweat, and tears on top of whatever obligations that you have? Do you have time to juggle both and serve both clients well? Those are the questions you have to ask yourself.
You still have to constantly grow when you are a mentor or coach. Especially as an educator, constantly improving, trying things out, experimenting, learning new things, and constantly humbling yourself. You have to be aware if you are willing to give the time and energy that this is going to take.
