Alright, so let us start by painting a picture for you: Does any of this sound like you??
Cool, then it’s probably about time we talked about boundaries on social media.
Social media is hard. ESPECIALLY as a small business owner. It’s pretty necessary for marketing these days, but yet it can be a beast that, if not handled properly, can eat you alive.
So in today’s episode, we’re gonna talk ALL about social media and boundaries within those apps and we’ll talk a lot specifically about Instagram, but a lot of this also applies to not just all social media but just PHONES in general!
If you’re needing the tools and resources to set healthy boundaries and take back your life with those addictive little apps, then today’s episode is for you.
Recognition that social media likes & follows does not equal your success or worth. We can tell you that all day every day but it is something you have to feel in your heart and understand in your heart for it to make sense. We all want more social media followers, especially as a business owners, but it’s so important to remember even if you have a tiny Instagram audience which we think 1,000 is tiny now but have you stood in front of a thousand people before? We need to reframe our mindset.
There is nothing wrong with wanting more followers and having more of a presence, but your social media presence DOES NOT define you. If you want more followers, then great welcome to the club, but we will say if you have a number in mind the second you get to that number, you’ll want even more. There’s always more. It never stops. Numbers are elusive and they also mean nothing. Just because you have a number next to your name does not equal success. Be aware that numbers are elusive and your social media presence does not define you or your success.
Think of yourself in 30 years. What are you doing? What does your life look like? Does your follower count or how many people liked your latest post have ANY value at all in your life? The answer should be a resounding NO. Again, a number next to your name means nothing next to your legacy in this world.
Practical Social Media Boundaries
This is a very personal thing and will look different for every single person. And every person is going to feel different with different boundaries, situations, and life seasons. Decide what YOU are comfortable posting and what you are not. We always ask ourselves, when is vulnerability too much for me? You want to share your personal life, when we say personal life, you don’t have to share your husband or wife or kids if that is a boundary for you. We know a lot of people who can share a personal brand without getting their families involved.
Where is your line of vulnerability that you are comfortable not crossing?
Pay attention to the difference between sharing something uncomfortable versus something that doesn’t sit well with you. There is a level of discomfort when you share something like struggling with acne, but that is very different than having something not sitting well with you.
Think twice before posting something controversial or testy or something in the heat of the moment. We’ve been there but almost always give yourself a day, pray about it, ask friends about it. Have people to bounce feedback off of. Take time before posing something IN the thick of when you’re going through it – especially if it’s hard or heartbreaking. If you want to eventually share, that’s awesome, but while you’re IN it might not be the best time.
Pray before posting something personal and vulnerable. Ask yourself, is this too personal? Will sharing this benefit someone else? Not only you, you have to consider yourself as well. Serving other people with your vulnerability but also protecting your heart.
NO phone in the bedroom. We know the first thing is you use it as an alarm clock but get an alarm clock. Not your phone.
Shut off the phone or put it on airplane mode while working and put it in another room if you can. So then you have to be very intentional about walking into the other room to get it instead of just automatically reaching for it when bored! We are wired that the minute we have any space for boredom or in between something we reach for our phones and then thirty minutes later we’ve been scrolling.
Time limits on your phone and apps:
You can do this on your iPhone. It is under screen settings and we’re not sure about Android. Lindsey personally has a screen time where a majority of her apps shut off at 8 PM and then come back on at 8 AM. For Evie, she has a shut-off time at 7 PM and back on at 8 AM.
Tips for phones & kids
If you raise them that way and that is not the default they’ll never know anything different. There is grace in all of this. But as an entrepreneur how can you showcase that well with your kid and viewing the phone only as a phone. Tell them your phone is a work tool, not a toy.
Try as much as possible to keep your kids screen-free if screens are draining you and you don’t want that for your children. If you’re on your phone and your kid keeps asking for your attention, make sure you’re not completely ignoring them while on your phone. What is that teaching your child? The phone and the screen are more important than them. Yes, you have to go to work but there are ways to set boundaries so that they don’t always see it. There are blurred lines but give yourself grace.
The bottom line is boundaries with social media take work and you have to put that in for you and your business model. It is a personal thing and hopefully, this gave you some good principles.
