Welcome back to our Team Interview Series! Today we have a freaking TREAAATTT for you! Today, we’re talking to our girl KT Howie.
KT is our Content Creator and Community Manager at The Heart University. She’s the brains and brawn behind most of our Heart Instagram content and the beast behind our video editing for courses, PDF and graphic design, and quite literally so much more. But she didn’t start there! She started as an intern for Lindsey a couple of years ago and that is a WILD story in and of itself.
Today she shares her journey of dreaming of living in NYC to the huge pivot and surrender to the Lord she made that led her to land an internship with Lindsey in Hawaii. From there she’s just continued to grow with us as a company and is now a full-blown team member who is invaluable to our daily operations.
There are LITERALLY so many reasons why you need to listen to this podcast episode it’s not even funny. We covered SOOOOO much with KT.
If you’ve ever wondered what a unique and powerful internship model looks like, or what it’s like to be on the content creation side of The Heart team, or how Lindsey and I kinda threw her into the deep end of social media when she first started.
Or if you’ve ever struggled with making something an idol in your life or battled with the belief that giving up your big dreams to trust what God has for you automatically means that you’re settling for less than what you want, Ohhh KT has some words for you.
It’s such a powerful, fun, and real interview today. And we know you’re gonna get so much goodness out of KT’s story and her wisdom.
To fully explain it, we need to give you a little back story. For KT’s entire life she grew up on a farm in the middle of nowhere Kansas. Having loved the movie The Wizard of Oz was because she felt she could relate so closely to Dorthy. She was also a farm girl in the middle of Kansas who longed for adventure, in her mind New York City was KT’s Emerald City. That was all she cared about when she hit her teenage years. Seeing New York as an adventure city, loving the idea of the hustle and bustle being amidst all the action.
KT had it all planned out. Getting a big job working on the 30th floor of a skyscraper overlooking Manhattan. She was over the farm. Twenty years of her life were dreaming about moving to New York City.
Fast forward to her senior year of college and her whole plan was to move to New York City after she graduated. KT was out there scouring LinkedIn and the internet trying to find her golden ticket out of Kansas. She was looking for any excuse to move there, not caring what she did or what got her there. She would do anything to move there.
Around this time and season of life, KT was feeling very anxious and overwhelmed that she wasn’t going to find a job and be able to move there. Scared of where her future was headed.
Also around the same time, she was in a Bible study and was grabbing a coffee with her mentor Jordan, chatting about different dreams, aspirations and coming to the realization that she had made an idol of her dream to move to New York City. She did not care at all what God had to say about her dreams, aspirations, or anything along those lines. KT realized that God wants to be a part of all areas of our life. Which includes our dreams, our career, and even the little daily things. She felt a lot of conviction to finally lay it all down to Him and give Him those aspirations. Surrender to Jesus and have His way in her life.
KT was scared because she had never asked God what He wanted her to do, never thought about aspirations, or what she was majoring in. She didn’t ask Him about any of those things. She was so scared that He would ask her to stay in Kansas. She had never confronted that with Him and didn’t want to let go of those plans. That was the start of her finally letting go and trusting Him with it.
This was around Christmas time and she was at her mentor’s engagement party when Lindsey’s friend Ashley who was the director of their college ministry, came up and said she had an internship for her in Hawaii for a year with Lindsey. If KT said yes it was her, didn’t need to apply or anything. Not long after she had an informal interview with Lindsey and Andrew. Closely after friends had prayed over KT regarding this decision to move to Hawaii and they had been given images of dolphins and her in a boat amidst a storm but her remaining steady. KT felt that was the confirmation from the Lord that this was the next step for her. That is when she accepted.
The Heart:
Lindsey
Before KT accepted the internship, she had worked with social media before and knew a little bit about it from Story Branding and some principles. Is it her favorite thing? It’s pretty low on the totem pole but KT likes it more now than when she first started. There are some aspects she enjoys and others she doesn’t. It was a learning curve. KT enjoys long-form writing, so when it came to captions it was a learning curve for her.
Her biggest tip for anyone wanting to start is to become a storyteller. That is really what it comes down to. Learn how to tell a story and evoke that emotion by being real and raw. Frame your mind into being a storyteller and come at it from that perspective.
Balancing is an art KT says she has not perfected but is getting better. Falling into the category of a workaholic and she has to set boundaries.
Implementing a sabbath and spending time with God has helped her with that balance. Making sure she has intentional time with him. There are certain cues in her life that will get her to stop working and one of them is sunsets. KT loves to stop working and go watch the sunset at the beach and be done with work that day. That is a good cue for her to know when to be done.
Favorite: Anything long-form, videos, projects. KT loves brainstorming.
Least: Social media, she doesn’t hate it but she’s had to work at being witty and good at the short form.
Ding dongs- you’re so goofy in real life. We can all just be chilling and that is okay. You’re real and raw always.
As leadership, you do a good job of putting the person before the work, which gives buy-in. You do a good job of loving your people first and then getting down to the nitty-gritty. You do a good job of recognizing our personal lives before our work lives.
