A beast of a concept that can leave a lot of small business owners feeling overwhelmed and confused. We’re talking EMAIL LISTS!
Now I know what you may be thinking… “freaking heck guys, there’s so much to think about as an entrepreneur?! I have Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, TikTok, and now EMAIL LISTS?!?!”
But take a deep breath. Cause we’re about to make this super easy to understand and super exciting to tackle.
Today, we’re covering the basic principles and strategies you need to understand when it comes to building an email list. Why is it even important? What platforms should you consider? Who needs an email list? What are the first steps to getting started building one?
ALL of those answers and more coming at you on today’s show. It’s time to stop putting off email lists and tackle them sooner rather than later. It’s not as hard as it may seem.
The first thing to remember, you should not be putting all your eggs in the social media basket. We know it’s fun and flashy, but you don’t own Instagram & Facebook. Mark Zuckerberg does. The truth is tomorrow they could up and delete Instagram (probably not going to happen but still) and you would lose everything you’ve built. Again you don’t own the platform.
With email, you do. With email, you don’t have to deal with the algorithm. The algorithm only shows your content to a fraction of your followers and you don’t have much control over that. With email, it’s more intimate. It’s a message you’re sending straight to someone, and you can respond to a message directly vs. commenting on a social media post.
Even personal emails FEEL more intimate than DMS. They’re longer and they give the perspective that you spent a lot of time writing a response back.
Emails are not only on our on your terms and turf, they plain work. ESPECIALLY if you’re selling a physical or digital product or even an online service like coaching. Building up an email list to notify when things launch or go on sale is a great way to market in addition to just relying on social media.
Start with freebie opt-ins. To get people to sign up for your list, you need to give them a return on that investment. People HATE spam or junk emails that just sell them stuff. So to get their valuable sacred email address, you need to give them an immediate return. Create a PDF or video or template giving value away that is in your niche that your ideal customer would find helpful.
Examples of good freebie opt-ins:
On whatever email service platform you use, you can create opt-in forms that you can either embed on a page of your website OR within the platform itself create an opt-in page. We said earlier we recommend Flodesk for beginners and Flodesk makes it SUPER easy to create an opt-in form. SO if you’re brand-spankin’ new to growing an email list, start with Flodesk.
If you’re wanting to get started with your email list, here’s a framework to get you started:
Step 1 – Sign up for a mailing list. If you’re just starting, we recommend either FloDesk or MailChimp.
Step 2 – Create an opt-in or a reason for people to want to be on your list. Whether that’s a freebie that will serve your audience (like the examples we listed above) or even an exclusive offer: “my email list will be the first to get this new offer, along with a __% off discount!”
Step 3 – Batch some value-based emails to continue to serve your audience. This could be weekly or monthly tips or tools, answering some common questions and serving them with that value, life updates, or tips (if people enjoy connecting with you for your personal life).
Step 4 – Create an audience, a group in your email service provider that everyone who signs up for that freebie you created will be added to.
Step 5 – Create your opt-in form page and link it so that when people sign up on that opt-in they are added to the audience you created.
Step 6 – Make the first email triggered when people sign up for that form have the link to your freebie inside it. You can either include the file in the email itself OR you can link it to download or watch. If it’s a PDF we recommend uploading it to your google drive or dropbox and then linking that file OR if it’s a video we recommend uploading to Vimeo and linking that video to watch.
