We have a question for you: are you feeling completely and utterly drained? If you clicked on this episode, we’re guessing you probably are, and you are in the right place! We know the last couple of years have been crazy (to say the least) and there seems to be an epidemic of exhaustion and burnout happening in SO many people.
First and foremost, you are NOT alone. Secondly, this won’t last forever. This isn’t your new reality. As hard as it may be to see it right now, there’s an end to this feeling of hopelessness and exhaustion. We’re here on today’s episode to share our hearts and thoughts with you on burnout, exhaustion, and overwhelm. This is a mix of encouragement, a pep talk, and a few strategic tools that have helped us overcome your exact feeling. We hope this episode encourages you, gives you hope, and floods you with inspiration and resources to fight your burnout.
Types of rest
Diving in one of the FIRST things we wanted to talk about, before even getting into the meat of the tools is the TYPES of rest. We’ll touch on this super briefly because we have an entire episode on it (Episode 77 – with Dr. Saundra Dalton-Smith) but essentially if you’re feeling exhausted in every way no matter how much sleep you get or coffee you drink. You probably aren’t utilizing the proper type of rest. Go listen to that episode to hear more of what we mean. It’s MIND-BOGGLING psychology and science that will change your life and your approach to rest.
Take time to SLOW DOWN (if at ALL possible)
- Play hooky, give yourself a break. Take a day or two or a weekend off work.
- If you’re a creative entrepreneur, get creative in other ways/purely for the joy of it! Try a new hobby, or dive into projects that bring you life.
- Get into a morning & evening routine, having a rhythm in your life will help more than you think.
- Within that routine create time to take care of yourself. Whether that is taking a hot shower or bath. Give your kids to family, friends, or a babysitter and do something just for you – get your nails done, paint on a canvas, go on a solo walk, take a nap, etc.
- Take a sabbath – one day a week and DON’T WORK. ACTUALLY, do the Sabbath. Most people don’t.
Get rid of screens
- Turn off the news.
- Shut off your phone.
- Stop watching tv.
- Stop looking at screens first thing in the morning and the last thing at night.
- STOP turning to outside voices. All it does is give anxiety and restlessness.
DIVE into Jesus and His word
First thing in the morning, replace reaching for your phone to reaching for the Bible. Put your bible right by your bed if you are bad at remembering.
Talk to Jesus like a friend (He is) and tell Him your struggles. Memorize scripture to start combating lies the enemy tries to whisper into your brain.
Get outside
Go for a walk, a hike, start working out. Moving your body will release endorphins, the feel-good emotions. With that leave your phone at home. Try and make this a daily thing. Even if it’s cold. Fresh air is LIFE.
Hang out with friends IN REAL LIFE
- Stop messaging and interacting only online.
- Go to the park, have a group picnic, get kids together for a playdate, grab coffee with a friend.
- Message friends FIRST. Don’t wait for them to invite you to places. Start the conversation. Have a couple of friends over for dinner and games.
Ending with encouragement
You were not made to go full steam ahead with no breaks. God did not create you to be burnt out and not be able to use the talents and gifts that He gave you. God created Sabbath for a reason. SLOW down. Ask for help. Get outside. Stop looking at screens. Turn off the news.
We are living in an overstimulating world where way too much info is literally at our fingertips. Our minds weren’t intended to know absolutely everything going on in the world and our friends’ lives. It instantly puts pressure on ourselves to measure up, or it gives us paralyzing anxiety for what’s happening in the world around us.
Know that you are a gift. Your life has a purpose. God created you for GOOD works. And you cannot be the blessing He intended you to be if you’re exhausted or running on empty. You just can’t.
