If you would have told 2016 Lindsey she would be speaking to today’s guest on her podcast…she would not have believed you. Today we welcome Ben Higgins onto the show. Her bachelor fangirl self is screaming right now.
Today our conversation with Ben covers so many incredible things. Have you ever felt like you’re on the outside of an inside joke everyone else is in on? Have you ever wanted to do something important for the world, but don’t know where or how to start??
In our conversation with Ben, he tells his story of the Bachelor and how his journey with the show catapulted him to fame and his advice to anyone struggling with feeling alone, left out, or unseen. Ben breaks down SO much truth on finding your identity and purpose in life, sharing many of his own stories and turning point moments along the way. We then pivoted the conversation towards business and Ben shared some POWERFUL insights into building a business with a mission purpose in mind.
If you’re like Evie and maybe not as tuned in to Bachelor Nation as Lindsey, here’s a bit about Ben that you need to know before tuning in to today’s INCREDIBLE conversation.
Ben Higgins is best known from season 20 of, “The Bachelor.” Ben co-founded Generous International, a for-purpose coffee company, and Humanity & Hope United, a non-profit serving underserved villages in remote Honduras. Ben is also the co-host of the “Almost Famous Podcast, and has several other successful business ventures under his belt as well.
The book was a journal initially through college. Ben struggled with the idea that everybody else is in on something and he didn’t get it. Always feeling like everybody else gets it and he was not getting it. Early on in his life, based on changes and identity on being an athlete, blowing out his knee to then being addicted to painkillers to numb the depression or lack of identity. To then going into college and not knowing where he fits in. Ben was very average at a lot of things, to then post-college accepting a job and not understanding why he was doing it, to then going on the show to get a lot of praise and criticism. Throughout all of that Ben kept asking himself “what does all this mean?” “what is all this for?”. The question that we need to ask ourselves is “What are we meant to carry?”. When he wrote Alone in Plain Sight it was the response that he was feeling, which was feeling alone, and disconnected.
The more and more you focus on yourself the less and less you feel fulfilled. But the more and more you focus on others and yourself, the joy, understanding, and stories will come. All the organizations that Ben is a part of now allow him to use his time and days to not be completely selfish.
It happens often and in small moments. There is not this one grand moment, where now all of this is gone or makes sense. Part of the gift that has come is the ability to feel the unknown which has allowed Ben to stay humble or in the mystery which allows him to stay empathic to others. The moments of maybe not feeling unseen but listening to why you might be feeling that way right then. Embracing that moment of the mystery of who you are in that moment.
Give up the idea that today you are going to say “this is who I am and tomorrow I am going to be the same”. Give that idea up. The older Ben get the more God becomes like the wind to him, the spirit guides and directs and intune to that. To be excited about that changing process has brought freedom.
Ask yourself often and regularly, “who am I?”.
Who are you in the eyes of God? Who are you when you see yourself as the most beloved? For who you are.
When you look at your identity, strip away the titles that the world gives you. Strip away at the titles of mother, father, sister, brother, etc. Take away all those things that feel like some expectation and say “who am I as a child of God?”. That will help you see more clearly.
The biggest thing is, when speaking about fame or success, it is meaningless. There is not a lot of significance in that. Success and fame are not fulfilling. Trust Ben in that, it doesn’t do anything for your soul. We need all of us and every piece is unique and has value because it fits in a bigger picture. You won’t know without trying.
What is upsetting you? First, find out that that will help align with your purpose.
The next step would be partnering with or starting some organization that is already doing what you care to be doing. There are already a lot of organizations out there that need human support. See if there is already a business doing what you hope to be doing and come alongside them.
If there isn’t anything out there, then it’s asking if the mission you are going down is actually hurting or helping? Is there a better way to do this so less damage is caused?
Finally when you want to start your own business and make sure you stick your stake in the ground and don’t alter the course for your own benefit.
As your business grows there are more demands on you. About two years ago Ben was sitting in a place where he knew he wasn’t the right person to continue on this path. He is now the president and has hired a CEO. That was a hard season, you birthed this baby and had big dreams, it wasn’t that you aren’t able but you’re not the best person. So that knew leadership can come in and help redirect and guide.
It’s always the people you can surround yourself with and the team that will make a company successful. Freeing up people in leadership positions and into their passions.
