Today we’re welcoming Stephanie May Wilson to the show where we had the sweetest & most refreshing girl talk you’ll hear in a long time. We talked with Stephanie all about her journey with coming to know the Lord and how that completely changed the trajectory of her life and career. We discussed how your 20s and 30s are some of your biggest decision-making years and how to go about navigating unknowns and big decisions with the Lord. We even covered one of the most important questions we can ask as believers: how do we share our faith and beliefs with others in a way that is loving and authentic, and not pushing others away?
This conversation will be a breath of fresh air to your soul and insight into the biggest challenges we can face as believers in life. Are you ready to get your heart inspired?
Stephanie’s Story
Stephanie is an author, podcaster, speaker, and the go-to guide for 20 & 30-something women as they navigate their most important relationships. Through her books, her courses, and her chart-topping podcast, “Girls Night,” Stephanie has mentored more than a million women as they cultivate healthy, thriving relationships with God, their friends, their significant others, and themselves.
How Stephanie Met Jesus
The turning point for Stephanie was a gigantic heartbreak. Halfway through college, she found all significant relationships in shambles. The only thing that was going for her was school. When she went through the huge breakup, she always said the best thing to do when you get your heart broken is to leave the country. It just so happened she was going to be studying abroad the next semester, in Seville, Spain. While over there, there was a weekend break, and Stephanie and some girlfriends went to Rome. While doing a tour of the Sistine Chapel, (Stephanie likes to note she was hungover and wearing a pub crawl t-shirt) and as she wandered through she turned around and caught sight of The Last Judgement on the back wall by Michaelangelo. At that moment something happened where Stephanie wasn’t locking eyes with the painting but was locking eyes with Jesus. She felt her heart stop, she saw this best friend that she hadn’t seen in a million years and just wanted to hug him. She found herself saying “I want to know Him, I want Jesus to know me”.
Trusting God in the process
It seems easier to have God dictate every single twist and turn in your life. It’s the faithful thing to do, sit there and not move at all until He tells you to move next. Our life is so much better when we join God.
The more you trust God with different pieces of your life. The easier it gets. You have a track record. In times when it’s hard to trust God, it can be helpful to look back on the times He has taken care of you in the past. Then you can remember that He is the same.
Surround yourself with really good people. People who are living life the way you want to live. Have people in your life that you can talk to and weigh in on.
Sharing the Gospel with a non-believer without being pushy
When we’re talking about our faith, we are coming up against a billion years of weirdness as Americans in our culture now. Christians have gotten this representation as being a used car salesman or trying to sign you up for an MLM. You don’t want them, the person is going to be really pushy and doesn’t care about you and just wants to push an agenda. That’s not always fair or always the case. A lot of people are going to have some sort of wall up if you start trying to evangelize.
Don’t overcomplicate it. Instead of trying to figure out the exact right thing to say. Instead, focus on being a good friend. That’s an important first step, anything else sounds like a used car salesman. Actions speak so much louder than words.
Don’t judge them, it is your not place, your job, or helpful for you to tell them what they’re doing wrong. You need to be a safe place.
Instead of trying to figure out your bullet points, just tell your own story. When you use “I” statements it takes down so many instant walls people put up when Jesus is mentioned.
How to boldly share your faith in business without turning people away
It’s “I” statements. Speak English and use normal people’s words, don’t speak Christianese. It can be really exclusive. Just tell your own story and then people will apply it to their own life and how they see fit.
What is the biggest lesson you have learned in business?
Everyone is scared, everyone is intimidated. Don’t wait until you’re not scared.
What’s your fave book you’ve read recently?
