Today we’re chatting about a tender topic that we hope and pray gives you a renewed perspective and PERMISSION to rest.
Before we go on, we want you to answer this question.
Do you ever feel paralyzing guilt anytime you take a break?
Whether it’s quitting work early to rest or being with your kids?
Maybe it’s taking a week off for vacation and beating yourself up the whole time to the point that you don’t even enjoy your vacation because your to-do list is piling up in the back of your mind stressing you out?
If you said “YES that’s me” to any of those questions, then this episode is for YOU, my friend. Today we are having an honest girl chat about the guilt we feel when we take breaks from work, why we feel it, and WHAT we can practically do about it.
First ask yourself, how are you?
Do you need to take time to rest for yourself? A lot of us feel guilty when we think of the concept of rest. We need to shift our perspective around rest: rest is not lazy. Rest is not bad. Rest is not unproductive.
For a lot of we think of rest as the reward. Rest is sometimes the most productive thing you could do. It might not feel like you’re accomplishing something, but you ARE. You are accomplishing rejuvenating your body. You’re accomplishing NOURISHING your body. Resting is productive it’s just not productive in the way that you’ve been trained to think of productivity.
When you rest your body, mind, and spirit you are doing SOOOOO MUCH.
If God rested on the 7th day why do we think we can do what HE didn’t even do? There are 7 days a week and that is not a coincidence.
More does not always equal better. More often it means worse. STOP feeling guilt over taking a break. Taking a day off. Don’t put that pressure on yourself that shouldn’t be there.
Ask yourself: is someone external putting pressure on you to not take a break? Or are you putting that pressure on yourself? If it is yourself, why?
Why Do We Feel Guilty
We want to gain success of some sort. What about our world is telling us that accomplishing and achieving is the highest honor? We want our lives to mean something, we want to feel important at the end of the day. The world rewards people who seem like they are hustling. Doing “more” doesn’t mean doing “better”
We don’t live to work. We’re made for work, yes, and work can give us a lot of purpose and structure that we need. But our whole life shouldn’t just be work. It also shouldn’t just be rest. We were made for BOTH. Embrace BOTH.
Exercise to try:
If you are still struggling with guilt ask yourself and answer these questions. This will help create the goal of where you are trying to get.
- What’s most important to you in life?
- What do you want your legacy to be?
- What do you want to be remembered for?
Do you want to have peace and joy and freedom in life? Do you want your kids to remember you as a patient parent who was present and taking time to play with them? Do you want to build a business where you pour into others as well as help provide for your family?
Take a minute to write down what’s important to you. That should make it clear what you need to make time for and most likely, to make time for it, you need to step off the hamster wheel and take time “off”.
Wrap Up
Hopefully, this reminded you of the value of rest and spoke some life into you. It will not only affect your life but your family and friends around you. You cannot pour out or accomplish ANYTHING if you’re running on empty from an empty cup.
