We’re welcoming onto the podcast 2 Olympic athletes and INCREDIBLY powerful and inspiring women – Arianne Jones and Paige Lawrence.
These two ladies met while competing at the 2014 Olympics. Arianne competed in luge at the 2014 Olympics, 50 World Cups, 5 World Champs, and won 2 World Cup medals. Her Olympic career was filled with a decade of overcoming naysayers who told her that she would never amount to anything, overtraining and finally, breaking her back, which was the catalyst to discovering the power of nutrition. After coming back 8 months later to win Gold she became obsessed with the untapped potential behind what is at the end of our fork and the power of your mindset.
Paige competed in pairs figure skating at the 2014 Olympics, 21 International Competitions (medalling at several), and was the 4x Canadian Pairs Bronze medalist, and is now dedicated to helping entrepreneurs unlock their potential and achieve outstanding results while avoiding burnout. Through her Olympic career, Paige learned firsthand the exact mindset and skill set that is required for optimal performance, however, she also learned how the “high-performance career at all costs” mentality can cut a rising career short. She is now passionate about helping others achieve high performance in their businesses, achieve their audacious goals, and feel fulfilled without sacrificing their physical and mental health and happiness.
We not only chat about their Olympic careers and the biggest lessons they learned in that process that they wish everyone could know, but we also dove into some very specific, tangible tools for entrepreneurs to take advantage of when it comes to pursuing big goals and success. It’s one of the most practical, tangible episodes of how to avoid burnout as an entrepreneur, the biggest mindset strategies you can implement that will change your life and your success, and how your food can actually completely transform your productivity and mental health.
Be a solution finder. It’s a growth mindset. The way you apply it as an athlete and as an entrepreneur is the same. We all know that the road to the top is filled with obstacles, pivots, and problems. If you are more invested in finding solutions than focusing on what’s wrong and what is stopping you, you will be able to continue to move forwards. If you are looking for a solution, you’ll find it. If you are looking for a reason to stop, you find it.
Ask yourself, “What is in your control right now?”. This wil help you focus on the controllable and look for the solution pieces that are there.
As athletes, we learn that the results that we achieve are a reflection of us, of what we do, how we show up. In business, it’s really easy to get distracted by all the things you are supposed to be doing. It’s easy also to give excuses for the results you are achieving. You lose sight that you are the person that is achieving those results. That is why burnout is such a thing, we try to do more, add more to the plate, or grab a resource instead of taking a look at the thing (yourself) and saying, “What do I need to do to be my best? When I am at my best I will get my best results”.
When you the vessel of your dreams are taken care of. When you do that you are capable of your dreams.
You need to have a strong enough why. By creating your personal why and having a strong enough why you can overcome any roadblock. Make your why bigger than other people’s opinions! Everyone and their dog is going to have their opinion about you, what does it matter when you know what you are doing and why you’re doing it. Have that ground you, so that you can overcome everything that comes up. Getting clear on why what you’re doing matters to you.
When we are so focused on a singular goal, there is one purpose in our life. That was getting to the Olympics for Paige and Arianne. Once that was gone, it left them very lost. Not prepared for it and struggling to know their identity it took them a couple of years to embrace who they were and where they were going next. There was a way forward from it.
The one thing that helped them bounce back was the thing that was fundamental to their success as athletes which was “how can I be better”? In your low moments of loss, the thing that can move you forward is how can you get better from here?
What does better look like for you?
How do you continue to move forward?
It will be a slow journey but in the end, you will be happy. If you are waiting for the thing to make you happy it’s not going to happen. It’s all about the journey, about celebrating the small wins and being present on those. When you get those wins you can celebrate the heck out of it, but you are already happy and enough without it.
As an athlete your mind and body is your tool, that’s your vessel, but it is the exact same as an entrepreneur. Everyone knows that as an athlete, but why aren’t we doing the same thing as an entrepreneur. As an entrepreneur your body and your mind is your vessel, how are you going to do the work? Your business and your dream can only be its best if you are feeling your best as well.
That is the mistake most people make. What you eat, drink, and think matters for your business. For your dream.
Treat yourself as you are your own greatest asset because you are.
It comes back to the fact of switching your mindset that as an entrepreneur, what you eat matters. Because garbage in is garbage out. If you’re fueling yourself with garbage why are you expecting great results on the other side?
Not only does what you eat affects your body but it affects your brain and how you mentally show up. Seratonin and dopamine are our neural transmitters, 80% of those neurotransmitters are made in your gut. Your mind should be blown, 80%!! If you’re not fueling your gut with nutrient-dense foods and instead you are giving it garbage. If it’s not running properly you’re not going to make those neurotransmitters. Your body will always prioritize inflammation, if your gut is inflamed then all your energy is going to go into bringing down that inflammation, which becomes the number one priority and making serotonin and dopamine become 2,3 or 4 priority.
Practical Foods & Breakfast
Win the morning. Start your day on the right foot. Have fuel in your body first thing, with fuel that is going to make you feel great. When you are starting yourself on the right foot you will be humming away. Starting your day without breakfast is like going on a road trip with your car on empty and thinking “Ehh I’ll get something down the road”, but you’ll get 10 miles down the road and run out of gas.
Your energy, your blood sugar, your mood is all fed by the fuel that we eat. See food as fuel and not looking at it as something that will make you gain or lose weight. Often that is how society presents eating to us, especially women. Instead view food as fuel which will help change the conversation because now “I’m tired = more caffeine”, but “I’m tired = I have low energy so I should choose to fuel myself with food”. It changes the conversation and gives you the ability of how to shift and optimizes your chances of changing your behavior.
Lastly, eat real whole foods because mother nature did it best.
Everyone is figuring it out as they go along. It’s easy to see labels, results and think they have it figured out and that’s why they are doing so well. It’s the opposite, they are willing to jump in, take action, get really messy, and figure it out. Everyone is making it up as they go along, they find their next first step and take it. Get messy with it, take action.
Progress over perfection. Take that next step, take the next best step with the information that you have.
