Today we’re talking about the massive impact and power that comes from having a business mentor in your life. As an entrepreneur, it can be freaking HARD as heck to build and grow a business all on your own. So often as entrepreneurs, we’re chugging at our dreams alone. If you’re the kind of person who didn’t come from an entrepreneurial family and don’t have friends who are also in the entrepreneurial world then it can be so lonely not to mention difficult to navigate the mindset blocks and how to run a business.
This is why investing in your business with a coach or a mentor who understands it, who is in your industry or understands business, in general, can make a huge impact on your success as a business owner. Let’s dive into the top 3 reasons why you need a business mentor in your life and our top tips on how to find one. Let’s go.
Having outside, unbiased input that can navigate decisions and emotions with you
It’s SO easy to get stuck in our heads and not be able to see the bigger picture from running our businesses ourselves. You are in the middle of everything and it can be hard to step back and get that aerial view. Having an outside perspective of someone who’s not doing the daily operations of your business is helpful. They can provide new insights or ideas you never thought of, give you a spark or creative direction, and come at your business from a different perspective than you who is the parent of your business.
Being able to pull from their years of experience to help you accelerate your growth even faster (and with way fewer mistakes)
Most creative entrepreneurs get into business because they’re turning a passion they love into something to be monetized. With that comes the fact that a lot of people aren’t business and entrepreneurial gurus from the get-go. They’re skilled artists or creators learning business and marketing skills as they go.
And that’s where most fail because while they’re super good at the creative part of running a business, they fall flat when it comes to the strategy of scaling, marketing, and understanding the legal & financial know-how that you need to be successful and smartly run a business.
That’s where a business mentor is valuable. You can hire business mentors or coaches to teach you how to do the creative part of your business, especially if you’re needing help with the actual making or doing of your service/product, however, most often a business coach or mentor who comes alongside you to give you wisdom and insight into the high-level business and marketing strategies of your business can be so helpful.
A business coach (even if they’re in another industry than yours) can save you years of trial and error, messing up and spinning your wheels. Yes, they’re an investment, but the hours of time and money you’ll waste doing it on your own versus getting an exact blueprint from a coach is worth more than gold.
Learn from mentors who have walked before you.
The emotional and mental benefit of having someone in your corner who is walking with you and fighting for you
Being an entrepreneur is hard. It’s emotionally draining. It can be lonely. And sometimes, that’s what can trip us up more than even “knowing the steps.” When we’re overwhelmed, exhausted, lonely, or bored that can put us in a rut and make us want to give up faster than anything else. Having a community that helps you alongside your journey, but even more powerful can be a mentor who has the authority to give you some tough love. Who has been through it on their own too, and knows exactly how to help you navigate the ups and downs of running your own business.
How to find one:
- Look at other entrepreneurs or business owners that you admire who are a few (or more) steps ahead of you and reach out to them to see if they offer mentorships or coaching. Pay close attention to not only someone who is “successful” but someone who is heading in the same direction you want to go in and holds similar values. This is huge when asking someone to speak and walk intimately through life with you.
- Ask fellow entrepreneurs who they’ve used as a mentor or a coach before (ask around in FB groups, your friends, people you follow on IG). If you do go this route and you’re exploring someone you’ve never followed or learned from or “met” before, just do your research and make sure they know what they’re doing, they know how to teach and lead, and they’re seeing the results you want to see and heading the direction you want to go!
It doesn’t matter where you, you need somebody who is ahead of you to speak and pour into you. It can be a big investment to work with a mentor or a coach but we promise, the results you’ll see in your life and business are WORTH IT.
