If you struggle with social media marketing, your mindset around creating content, knowing how to reach your ideal audience online, you NEED this episode. Today we have the honor of talking to the social media marketing guru herself, Jasmine Star.
Today Jasmine is going to break down many mindset barriers you have when it comes to social media and Instagram marketing as a whole. We discuss social media overwhelm, feeling like you have to create content 24/7, the biggest mistakes she sees entrepreneurs making on social media, and burnout and getting into creative ruts. We then deep-dived into discussing the announcement that rocked Instagram earlier this year when the CEO of Instagram Adam Mosseri said that “Instagram is no longer a photo-sharing app.” Jasmine spits some FIRE about that announcement, her thoughts on it, and how we as business owners should approach the app moving forward – hint: her answer might shock you. Get ready for it. Jasmine gave us some INCREDIBLE tips for creating video content on Instagram, including Reels and her thoughts are on captions for Reels, AND whether or not you should include influencer style personal content on your business account.
You’re going to leave this episode feeling energized and ready to go kick some social media marketing BUTT after you hear what Jasmine has to say.
Jasmine is a photographer and business strategist from Newport Beach, California. She dropped out of law school and became an internationally recognized creative entrepreneur, later to become the founder of Social Curator, a social media marketing membership for business owners. Harnessing her chutzpah and hustle, Jasmine empowers entrepreneurs to build a brand, market it on social media, and create a life they love. Some days you’ll find her featured in Forbes, Entrepreneur, and INC magazine, other days you’ll find her going Live on Instagram, hosting Ask Me Anything sessions on Facebook, and empowering business owners to build a life they love on her podcast, The Jasmine Star Show.
We will feel overwhelmed with a lot of things in business. You probably felt overwhelmed figuring out how to fill out a tax id, filling out taxes, choosing the right domain, or creating your website. Everything new is overwhelming but we can choose to sit in a perpetual state of “I am overwhelmed and won’t do something”. Or “I am overwhelmed and I need to figure out how to do something”.
You have to give yourself grace, no one is expecting you to do all the things perfectly. Doing something is better than doing nothing. Putting out something that you don’t deem is good or perfect is better than nothing at all. Perfection is just procrastination in disguise. Perfect doesn’t exist, perfect is subjective. What you might look at is perfect we might look at it as standard. And what we think is perfect you might look at is standard.
You are not the king or queen of perfection. You are someone simply putting something out and then the kings and queens on the internet get to decide. That is the difference.
If there are rules, Jasmine wants to know the rules to break them. Nobody stuck out by following the rules. We don’t do anything magical or great by doing everything the way everyone else is.
There are ways to improve things. Improving often comes alongside doing things that make people uncomfortable. Like giving engagement. As creative entrepreneurs, we put so much of ourselves into the product or service that we have a hard time disassociating the two. The photo you take, the cake that you bake, or the video that you are creating it’s a piece of you. When people aren’t responding to that you feel it’s wildly personal. You have to distinctly learn that anything you put out as a creative entrepreneur is not of us, it is by us. That allows you to take a step back and look at it analytically.
Give the engagement that you want. If nobody is liking or commenting, you must go and first like and give comments. If you want one person to leave a comment on your account, go and leave ten comments on ten different accounts. Those are thoughtful comments, more than four words because the algorithm will weigh those differently. Once you have given that type of engagement people will come back and be like “who is this person, what are they doing”. Even if the person you are leaving the comments on their account they might not come back to your account but people are looking at the conversations happening not to them and finding your account through them. Engagement becomes a billboard for your account, we must give what we ultimately want.
Analytically and statistically 20% of people on Instagram are making 80% of the content. That 20% saw the announcement that Instagram is no longer a photo platform but video and they all knew that. If you are a consistent content creator you will know that video was already outperforming anything else.
They didn’t say photos would be going away they were just going to be indexing video on the platform more. Adam or anyone else on Instagram is not out to sabotage our efforts with photos. They are making a business move, analytics show that people are spending more money and time and have a higher likelihood of sharing if it is video.
Not all pieces of content are created equal. If you could do one thing, you should create reels. At this time, the algorithm is over-indexing on reels.
Short-form and snappy is not overwhelming it is an opportunity. It’s an opportunity for you to do something that doesn’t come naturally to you and in the process of doing something unnatural you might develop a skillset or see some kind of powerplay that you have never experienced before. The mindset shift that is going to happen will move you past that and get you to take action.
H.I.C.
Use the H.I.C. in your comments, but it can also be applied in creating a reel. For somebody to watch the entirety of your reel, you have to hook them in. Tell them what the reel is about and it’s okay to qualify who should watch it. You follow this methodology and it goes from not being sure if you can post anything on social media to being confident that you can post anything and follow a formula that will get people to talk back to you. It’s a choice.
Not everybody will read the caption you write on a reel, but for the people who do it could lead from a cold lead to a warm lead or a warm lead to a hot lead. You’re trying to pre-qualify the people who are going to buy from you unless your ambition is to be an influencer. If you’re trying to convert a customer and post a reel that has a caption that says “Fall into Fall”, that is a wasted opportunity. This is an opportunity to not only cultivate an audience but a customer.
If somebody doesn’t read your caption, it’s not a loss, but for the person who does it could be a win.
Stop and rest. Resting doesn’t mean stopping, it means you are going to take a momentary break to get what you need together. It is okay to take a rest.
Often when we don’t feel like creating a reel, or batching posts, it is the act of doing. You are inspired when you are in motion. If we are waiting for inspiration to strike we are going to be waiting for a long time. Inspiration is wildly over-indexed and rewards people who are already in motion.
To know and get used to hearing “nos”. You will hear “nos” so much more often than “yes’s”. It doesn’t have to do with you, it has to do with the customer not being ready, the time not being right or the price not being right. Getting used to “no” is such a valuable lesson.
You don’t have to be the best, the richest, or the first to have a wildly successful career. You don’t need to be the most talented, educated, or most connected. You can simply show up and figure out how to serve a small group of people well and have a wildly successful career.
