If you know anything about us, you know we are big fans of reading books and learning constantly. We both read dozens of books each year, which a large portion of those being business books to keep our wheels turning, spark new ideas, and expand our knowledge. Today we’re about to drop 5 business books you need to read in 2022. If you haven’t already listened to it, we have another podcast episode with our favorite business books and what they taught us. You can go back and listen to that on Episode 70.
Marketing book by the founder of Red Antler which is a marketing and branding company. This book has an incredible breakdown of building a brand where you create obsession in your client base. People want more, they have buy-in to the brand and the brand mission. Evie listened to it while she was building EvieSwim and with EvieSwim wasn’t trying to create a brand with her as the face selling everything, but kind of turned into that. But long game it’s a brand mission, not a personal brand that people are buying into. We are familiar with and stepped into the personal branding, building that personal connection as you as the business owner with your client base. But what Obsessed talks about is how to build that buy-in with your brand mission and your client base. Not you and your client base.
We talked about this book in Episode 144 about our team retreat since we took this book as the blueprint for our team retreat. It is a course in a book. It’s a breakdown of how to set up the foundation of your business as a company. He wrote it technically for businesses that make anywhere over a million but anyone can use it. Even if you are a solopreneur we can’t highly recommend enough to read this book. It revolutionized how we looked at our businesses, how we thought of our businesses, how we looked at ourselves as leaders and bosses. It will give you a good business perspective on how to build your business and have core foundational principles.
If you are hoping to grow your company to a team, have smooth operations, have you as the owner have the flexibility to leave, it’s such a good book.
Essentially this is the part two/leadership portion of his business formula set up. Rocketfuel is meant for the CEO and Traction is still meant for the CEO but also for the team as a whole to understand the business. Rocketfuel is talking about the two-pronged partnership that makes up every great company which is an integrator and a visionary. We also talked about this book in Episode 144 our team retreat.
It talks about the concept of buyer psychology. What makes a concept or idea sticky? In the sense of how do our brains naturally remember things versus not remembering. Think about the McDonalds jingle, why do we all know it? Why is it so sticky? What about it made it stick in our brains permanently for years and that’s what they break down in the book. Concepts, ideas, marketing lingo, commercials, and jingles.
It’s a fascinating psychological book about what sticks in our brain and what doesn’t. There are so many examples in the book about how to story tell and how to make stories and characters stick in your brain as a business owner and a marketer. It will make you a better storyteller, writer, and business owner after reading this book.
Episode 167, go listen to this episode where we had Brian on before you read this book. Not an overt business book but a great leadership book. Great for any business owner but especially for one who is trying to build a team in any capacity. If you are familiar with John Wooden at all he is one of the icons of powerful and healthy leadership, so Brian takes John Wooden’s concepts and expands and breaks them down. Anybody can read this book, you don’t have to be a business owner, it will make you a better parent and friend.
This book talks about how things tip over into epidemics that go viral or widespread. It’s a fascinating look at the moments that lead up to and how to prepare for, anticipate and jump on top of that tipping point. He talks about the concept of people who start the epidemics, the innovators who start things. Everybody is not this person but this person connects people and things to ideas and that’s how epidemics of certain trends or fads tip over and get started. It’s from a couple of people who are highly connected to a lot of other people who start doing or wearing or talking about something. How does it get to the point where something is uncool and then becomes the new fad? What makes something tip over and how you can use that to marketing and your business?
She used to be a professional poker player and essentially walks you through the book on how to analyze situations, recognizes the potential of numbers with your opportunity for success or failure, and when to take risks and when not. When to bet and when to fold. It is applied not just to poker but to life. As a business owner so often there are those last-minute, high-pressure decisions that we have to make. We are making all bets in our businesses whether or not we invest here, or post this, all different decisions. We’re making bets on whether or not it’s going to work out. This book helps you reassess your decision-making, how are you analyzing the data and statistics around you and how can you better your decision-making to make profitable bets and further yourself.
