It has been the BIGGEST honor to do this show for 200 episodes, so today we wanted to do something special. To bring you a guest that we felt was worthy of the 200th episode slot. A guest who when we booked her, screamed and did happy dances cause she has been a MASTER in the online marketing space. Someone we’ve looked up to as entrepreneurs and especially course creators.
For our 200th episode, we have AMY PORTERFIELD IN THE HOUUUUUSEEEEEEEEE.
Now if you’ve been in the online marketing space for any amount of time, you know who Amy is.
You NEED today’s episode with Amy if you’re even the least bit intrigued by creating a digital course. Amy walks us through everything from figuring out your course topic and concept, to how to even begin creating one, what formats to consider, and so many other technical nitty-gritty tools to get you rockin’ and rollin’. On top of that, Amy covers strategies on how to build your audience before you launch a course to them, how to get your students to finish your course (a BIG challenge course creators deal with), the best formats for teaching digital courses, and what platform to host your course on.
Amy Porterfield is an online marketing expert and the host of the top-ranked podcast, Online Marketing Made Easy. Before building a multi-million dollar digital course business, Amy worked with mega-brands like Harley-Davidson and Peak Performance Coach, Tony Robbins, where she oversaw the content team and collaborated on ground-breaking online marketing campaigns. Through her bestselling courses and popular podcast, Amy’s action-by-action approach proves that even the newest online entrepreneurs can bypass the overwhelm, and instead generate exciting momentum as they build a business they love.
Amy is on a mission to help as many women to leave their 9-5 or any situation there in that they don’t love and help them become their own boss.
You take your knowledge and expertise and teach somebody how you got those results. You teach them through a good mix of video, audio, and PDFs. Your digital course doesn’t have to be super fancy. You can turn on your iPhone, film yourself, and fumble through slides of audio to put your course together. Never think that it has to be high-polished, high-production because it doesn’t.
If you are thinking about creating a digital course, you just need a 10% edge. The 10% edge you need is to be 10% ahead of those you serve and those you are going to teach in your course. You’re going to show them the roadmap of how you got the results. You don’t need a Ph.D. or ten years of certification, you just need a 10% edge.
If you are just getting started, starting to create content, and building up your social. First, figure out who your audience is and how you’re going to make money. When you’re starting to build your business online you need to get clear on what you’re going to offer to make money. There are so many different ways to make money online, but for somebody who’s a good fit for a digital course, it’s somebody that truly doesn’t want to keep reinventing the wheel.
When you create one digital course, you can launch it over and over and over again. Or you can just make it available every single day for people to buy it. The beauty of that, when you are trying to grow as an entrepreneur is if you keep starting over or keep starting from scratch, you’ll never see the consistent revenue come in. Creating one digital course and launching it over and over again will give you that consistent revenue.
If you are looking to create an offer that you don’t have to always start from scratch with, a digital course is a great fit. A digital course could live within the business you already have today. It could be an addition to what you are already doing. You can mix and match a digital course with any business structure.
You don’t. Everyone should have an email list. You should grow an email list, the best time to grow an email list is yesterday and the next best time is today. The reason for that is social media is fickle, it will come and go with the algorithm that we don’t control even in the slightest. If Mark Zuckerberg decided to change the algorithm, boom, how we do business could change. Let’s not grow our businesses on rented land, you own your email list. You don’t own social media.
You don’t need a huge social media following or email list to make money with your digital course.
Most of us have multiple digital courses in us, even if we don’t realize that we do. For those who don’t think they have a digital course in them, look at your life experiences. What have you done? What have you accomplished? What do you do that other people ask “how’d you do that?”.
Most of us are taking for granted our expertise and what makes us so special. Something that comes so easy to you, could be very difficult for another person but you don’t see it because it is second nature to you.
Course Creator Sweet Spot
In the middle, you will find that alignment of what type, of course, you should create. Choose a lane that you want to stay in and monetize that. That you become known for. If you have a few different ideas, ask yourself what audience do you have access to readily. Where is the low-hanging fruit? If you like both topics what is the easiest audience to access?
A lot of people start with a social media following, it could be a small following, but that is where they start. Get clear on what you are posting. Are you posting the type of content that would attract the person that would eventually want to buy from you? If you’re thinking of putting out a digital course, ask yourself if you are putting out content that would attract a person that would eventually want to buy this course? If not make some subtle changes with what you are putting out there to attract who you are wanting to attract.
Everyone should have a lead magnet, which is a way to grow your email list. A lead magnet is a checklist, a cheat sheet, a guide, a freebie, but the only way for them to get it is to give you their name and email in exchange for this freebie. Everybody should have something like that linked in their bio, they talk about it regularly, and they mention it on other people’s podcasts. We should all have lead magnets because they will lead people to come into your world and then start nurturing a relationship with them.
Amy and her team measure their success by the number of testimonials they receive. They count those testimonials and have a goal of how many success stories they want from their students. This will change your mindset, now to reach that goal you better do a really good job of helping people get those results.
A few actionable steps:
Amy’s has to do with her weight. Having always struggled with it since elementary school, she’s had to shift her mindset when she sees herself on camera. Having equated her weight to her success, she thought no one would take her seriously unless she looked a certain way.
Other women that look like you and feel like you need to see that you are still doing it despite. Amy wanted to be an example of what was possible.
