Today we’re stepping up to the mic with Julie Bevere from Sons and Daughters to talk all about finding your calling in life.
Juli is a co-founder of SonsAndDaughters, a collective of young adults, helping this generation discover the adventure, freedom, and purpose found in our creator. Juli and Sons and Daughters as a whole desire to see the sons and daughters of God rise to their potential so that their impact reverberates long after their final breath. They have a community of resources, vlogs, a podcast, and most recently, their book I Am.
Today we talked with Juli about calling and identity. If you’ve ever struggled with knowing if you’re doing the right thing in life, falling into the pit of comparison, or knowing WHO you are in life… this episode is about to rock your world. Juli leads us in such a powerful conversation of navigating finding your identity as a Son or Daughter of God and how that leads to finding your calling in life. From there, we discussed the difference between vocation and calling, how to navigate the secular vs sacred divide, what your calling is NOT, and so much more. It’s such a powerful episode that has the potential to change your life forever so DO NOT skip this episode.
First and foremost you have to be in a place of rest and awareness that you are a son or a daughter and that that is enough. This is who you are and anything you do is secondary to that. The stance that you stand in a place of righteousness and right standing because of nothing you’ve done. Everything flows from that and we get that mixed up.
In our western culture, we individualize it. What is YOUR calling? We’re always doing it in a way of how it would look on a resume as opposed to what piece of the body are you meant to play. It is a bigger picture, it is more than just us. More than just our vocation or our marriage. All of these things are important, but they are not THE thing.
Our calling is cyclical, it’s interwoven and it starts with this knowing. That you are a daughter and don’t have to prove that, nothing to prove, nothing to lose, and nothing to hide. It is between you and your Father and what He says and the path that He has made in front of you. And that will change throughout our lives.
We’ve based our identity on other individuals and that is where it gets messed up. That’s fragile, we don’t have to be afraid of the fragility but aware and know that it can crumble.
There is not a one size fits all answer for this. There are many people out there who will do many different vocations throughout their life. And all of it is their calling. The way that they position and approach each of those things is their calling. And then some people are so specifically designed for something that that is their calling.
Where is the messaging that creeps in, it’s everywhere but specifically Christian circles, that you have to find your calling. It is so stressful.
There’s not going to be a formula of step one step two and step three then you’re in heaven. This is a journey.
We all have a calling and it is to love God and love people. Pause and ask yourself if you are even doing that?
We have to stop putting people on these pedestals because they are being used in a unique way by God. That’s not to say we should not honor but the honor needs to go up and down, based upon our inaccurate idea of success. People need to know that they are just as called as the person standing on the stage Sunday morning. They are in just as righteous of a place with God because it is not based on what they are doing, it comes back to knowing who we are as a son and daughter. It’s not about just working at a church or ministry, it’s about doing what you are called to do right now, this day.
What are you called to do? Are you doing it?
We don’t have everything, no one person is going to be the total package no matter how hard they try to depict that on Instagram.
Juli believes it can be compartmentalized into calling, it’s always a deeper identity level. If you are asking these questions, you are needing something that you don’t have and grasping for something that you don’t have. First, get still and get silent. You can stop the hustle for the day or an hour and be still. Sit in this place of why, why are you confused? What is the question that you are asking and what’s behind the question you are asking?
Maybe even include a social media fast to help remove as many of your comparison triggers. This awareness of who you are, the different things that make up your perception of the world. Being aware of what they are is the best way to start removing them or refining them into what they need to be to best serve you where you’re not serving them.
You’re calling is not as fragile as you believe it to be. You haven’t already messed it up and you won’t mess it up. God has worked miraculous stories from the ashes. God is so specific and personal with our lives. We are not the ones in charge of our story, our life is this tapestry and only God can weave all of the different threads together to make it as beautiful as it is intended to be. Take that pressure off yourself.
