If you’re a photographer and you’ve had your eye on education as a way to grow and scale your business then HELLOOOO. Welcome. You’ve come to the right place. Today we’re going to talk a bit about pivoting into education as a photographer.
We cover how to know if it’s the right step for you, what myths we believe exist in the industry, and the first steps to keep in mind to scale your business. It’s a bit of a hard-hitting episode as we break down some industry myths around the topic. So if you’re ready to learn what we truly believe about photography education as a career step buckle up and let’s get started!!!
Is it the Right Step for YOU
The goal of scaling your business does not always equal education. We want to challenge the myth that your automatic next step in your career as a photographer is to go into education.
This is a perception in the industry because it can be a great avenue for passive revenue with courses or education.
Education is AMAZING. It is so fulfilling, challenging, purposeful and exhausting all at once. If you feel a calling or a passion for building up and training fellow photographers, THEN DO IT!!!!
That’s the foundation that matters in this industry.
However there is a misconception that education is where the money is, which is kind of true, it can be but is also a lot of work. It’s not a free ticket to wealth with no effort which is how it is almost portrayed in the industry. But if you’re just in it for the money…. Stop.
What is your ultimate goal? Sit down and figure that out first.
Photography education is awesome and is an option. But there are other directions you could turn. Associate photography or not even scaling your business or other passive revenue streams or business models to adopt.
Education is NOT the only way to scale and grow as an entrepreneur
Other (even more passive) revenue streams that may be a better fit:
- Real estate investment
- Digital products (prints, anything that doesn’t relate to photography education, etc)
- Dropshipping/Selling on Amazon
- Invest in other businesses
You don’t have to only invest in something that requires effort and time on your end. Don’t feel like that’s the ONLY path for you.
Take the time to evaluate WHY you’re doing it and what your ultimate goal is. If it’s to scale your business to bring in more income – this isn’t the only way. If it’s to have passive revenue to be fully present in other things/businesses/your family, etc – this might not be the path. Education is a full-time job. If it’s to equip and empower fellow photographers to CRUSH it in their business and that’s truly what sets your soul on fire… THEN DO IT!!!
First Steps
Pivot slowly. Don’t throw people off the back of the truck on a hairpin turn. Begin to share free education on your page for both your clients AND fellow photographers. Notice what questions or struggles your fellow photographers have and strive to meet those needs.
You don’t have to create a separate brand. Your photography and photo education can go super well on one page. Keep it simple and just keep in mind that during the pivot season (and however long you want to keep shooting photography) you’ll still be serving two clients.
A few products to begin to think about as revenue drivers:
- Guides or digital resources
- Presets
- A content photo day/shootouts
- Photography workshops
- Online courses
You do NOT have to do it ALL. Even just having a couple of resources or products can be enough!
