Today’s guest is the beautiful and incredible powerhouse, Cathy Heller.
Today we sat down for a conversation with Cathy all about finding the courage to live a life that you LOVE. So many people in this world are working in jobs they hate, living lives they don’t like, and operating out of fear of other people’s opinions.
In this episode, Cathy is about to bust through this conversation with so much encouragement and tangible tools to help you with your mindset around who you are, what you were made to do, and having the courage to just go for your dreams.
In the first half, we get nerdy and chat about neuroplasticity and the scientific effects of how stress is controlling and ruining your life. Then in the second half, Cathy answers the tactical question of what steps to take if you’re wanting to quit your day job and start that side hustle or dream. And BOY oh boy does she go off. Girlfriend gives an entire breakdown and blueprint for basically how to start a business or side hustle.

How to Find Clarity on What to Do
It’s not hard but it is uncomfortable. It’s about doing things that we get to test. We get to try things on. How do we find a wedding dress? Try a bunch of them on. All on the way on, zip them all the way up. Don’t just look at it on the rack.
When people say, “I don’t know what I want to do and have a business problem”. No, you don’t, you have a courage problem. We lack the courage to be messy and mediocre at things and try things on. It’s easy to figure out what your thing is if you allow yourself to try it. You’d be surprised, but how often do people ever do that? They have no data and they go, “I don’t know what I want”.
Sometimes we do know, but we believe “I am not enough” and “It’s not possible anyway”. Then I don’t know isn’t an I don’t know, but an I don’t believe in it.
Fear is so boring, it tricks us into living the most boring life.
How to not respond to stress or fear
Each person has male and female aspects. We are so dominated by this masculine energy. So we ask often this question, “What do I need to do?” and the question really is, “How do I need to be?”.
There’s not a ton of focus on what you are doing, but there is a hyper-focus on how you are being. The real deal is to really understand that frequency, and energy is more powerful than matter. Actually, frequency carries information. If we want to text someone but have no wifi, we won’t be able to text them, even if we have the most amazing phone. We live without a signal, we are obsessed with the phone. How big it is and how many apps are on it, but it won’t work without the signal. That’s where you start.
That means our job is to feel. To feel good. We are so addicted to feeling bad, the cortisol. Cortisol is the place that we go when we don’t feel good.
Imposter Syndrome
Imposter syndrome is the most egotistical thing because when somebody says, “I don’t think I am enough” or “I don’t think I am ready”. Who are they focused on? Themselves.
What aspect of themselves are they focused on? Ego.
When we are all at rest and not in our ego, we are desireless.
Imposter syndrome is making the ego alpha. Saying, “who am I to do this?”. That’s gross. Anyone who has done anything says, you just get out of the way.
Steps before you quit your day job
This will require courage. We can do hard things. Even the goals, it’s never the goal, it’s the satisfaction we have on our way to the goal that we keep stepping beyond what is scary. Realizing we have a greater capacity for bravery.
You should start to view your current job as the investor in your dream.
Select something. You might make something, teach something, do something, or curate something.
Sell something. You make a deposit before you sell.
Scale something. To scale it is to satisfy one customer at a time.
There is a market for everything.
What do you think has made your podcast “Don’t Keep Your Day Job” and your message resonate so much?
Intimacy is really a currency. Intimacy is really what we exchange. If you want to help someone go home, you have to know their address. You can help people because you have been at the bottom of the well so you know the way out.
