Today’s episode is PART TWO of our Heart Conference Attendees asking their questions to us on the podcast. If you missed the first episode, go back to Episode 257. I dunno about you but I have LOVED hearing your voices on the podcast and getting a chance to have a fun conversation with you in what feels like a more one-on-one way. *cue the Kim K tears*
In today’s Q&A we talk about how to become a healthy leader with your team, one thing we wish we knew when first starting our businesses, balancing our roles as co-owners, juggling work/life balance as a work-from-home entrepreneur, and setting boundaries with your clients, and one thing we wanted people to know about us.
This is SUCH a fun episode mixed with business advice and personal thoughts. Hopefully, you’ll walk away FILLED with some answers to similar questions and feel excited and empowered as an entrepreneur.
Mari: How do you best step into your role as a leader and empower your team members to build your business and be passionate about what you are doing? Instead of just viewing themselves as employees, doing their day-to-day tasks and then checking out.
Having a core company mission that is bigger than just you. Get them a part of the brand mission and what you are accomplishing. Every business out there can have a brand mission. Get your employees or independent contractors on board with that. Make sure they understand that them working for you is more than them clocking in and doing whatever they do.
There is a way to have a brand mission that is outwardly focused on your customers, but you can also have an inwardly focused mission. Give them autonomy in their work and what they do. Intentionally set the tone of how you want them to feel. The more you can allow your employees to have that sense of buy-in and solving problems.
Keeley: What do you wish you knew when you were starting out your businesses? And what advice would you give your past self when you were just starting out?
Lindsey: As an entrepreneur, success is not the end all be all. What looks successful on the outside is not what is important. What is most important is that you are living a happy, healthy, and thriving life.
Evie: Comparison kills. Comparison is the thief of joy. It will lock you in both creativity and passion. There is no timeline that I have to meet and accomplish everything in between.
Emily: How do you balance your roles as co-owners within the heart university?
Usually when you have two people starting a company, one is the visionary and one is the integreator, that is the typical combo. We are so unqique that we are different people but vision wise, culutre wise and ascethic wise we are so similar in where we want it to go. We are both more so visionaries which is not typical. At first, we were both approving and doing everything together, but as we grow we can’t do that. In general we have segegrated tasks and approvals.
We have an episode on business parnetships and in that we talk about this. But because we are so aligned on values and character, that’s what matters for us. At the end of the day, Lindsey approves a graphic, and Evie might have changed it but there’s no friction because we’re both working towards the same thing. The foundation, character and desire to honor God and our mission statement of The Heart is so aligned that everything else works.
Torie: When you are a creative and you have your family at home or working with your significant other, how do you differenientate between work and play/when that does cross over what is the verbaige or lingo you use to your clients? What boundaries do you put in place to keep it seperate?
A lot of our boundaries now are mostly with the team within The Heart. Don’t be afraid to set the boundaries with your team or clients. One of the ways to easily set boundaries with clients is to put a sentence or inbox hours in your email signature. Communicate and set boundaries. Don’t give out your phone number if you don’t want clients texting you. Have very strict office hours, to have that boundary in place. Not even for your clients but for yourself.
Rae: If there was one thing you wanted people to know or ask you specifically that you would hope that they would know about you, what would it be?
Lindsey: I want to glorify God with my life. When people see me or my life I want them to see the hand of God. I want people to come to the Lord because He is the author of your life, He is why you exist. He created you and has such a beautufl purpose for you.
Me writing a book, but more so to put pressure on me to write a book.
Evie: If people could know one thing about me and only one thing, I want to be known for loving the Lord with everything that I have. I want peoeple to see hwo much He has changed and impacted my life. How powerful the Holy Spirit has been in my life. I want people to look and be like I want that relationship with God.
My childhood upbringing and experiences. Being raised on a farm, homeschooling, so much of that formed and shaped who I am.
