Today’s episode will be less business-focused, and more lifestyle focused. We talk a lot on this show about motherhood and balancing business and personal life, and today’s conversation is so tender and close to our hearts. We’re chatting with our friends Cheyenne and Colton Lowe about their journey and passion for adoption.
Today we had the incredible opportunity to talk to Cheyenne and Colton all about their heart behind and journey with adoption, what the adoption process looks like, the best ways for someone to learn about adoption, misconceptions around the topic, and tips on how to navigate such a mentally and emotionally taxing opportunity in a beautiful and healthy way.
Cheyenne and Colton Lowe are full-time wedding and elopement photographers based in Kansas. But even more than entrepreneurship, one of the most sacred callings in their life is caring for the fatherless. From day one of the Lowes’ relationship, adoption was never a question of “if” but “when”. With all of Cheyenne’s siblings being adopted from India and having the privilege of accompanying her parents across the world to get her sister, adoption was deeply imprinted on her heart from a young age. Her eyes were permanently opened to a large world with unfathomable needs and an orphan crisis of 153 million abandoned children that is preventable. They know that they have been put on earth to advocate and be a voice for the vulnerable and the voiceless, and they are honored to be parents and open their home to these children. They want to be a resource to equip and motivate those around them to do the same.
It was in August of 2021, and they had always planned to have a biological child first and then adopt, but the Lord asked Cheyenne to switch that order. It brought her to her knees but made sense because any fear she had about being a mom completely crumbled. She said yes and prayed about it for a few days and then brought it up to Colton. When she brought it up to him at that moment he was googling adoption information. His heart had been going through that same process that same time that week, it was all the confirmation that they needed.
Cheyenne has two siblings that are both adopted from India. As a child, she got to go with her parents to India to get her sister. She grew up with adoption being normal, she was the only biological child. They all looked different and had different stories and it was beautiful.
Colton never really thought about adoption a ton growing up. When his family started hanging out with Cheyenne’s family and getting to know them, he saw the beauty and good in adoption.
Adoption was not a question of if but when.
Every country has different guidelines and rules. Cheyenne and Colton are going to specifically talk about India.
For India there are age requirements, you have to be a minimum of 25 and specifically, you have to have a 25 age difference from the child you are adopting. There is also an age cap. There are qualifications with income and finances, but manageable and doable. You have to be generally healthy and mentally healthy.
The Lowe’s want to see a day where adoption is amplified and normalized. There are rooms in people’s homes and hearts. Start with prayer, ask the Lord not if He can use you but how, when, and where. We’re called to have our hearts broken to what breaks God’s hearts.
You can talk to adoptive families, feel free to reach out to the Lowe’s. Talk to adoption agencies, they recommend International Adoption Net (IAN). Podcasts: The Defender Podcast, books: The Primal Wound and The Connected Child, and social media: @wilderwaythreads, @bryartonfarm.
