Earlier this year we did an episode that got INSANE feedback from you. It was episode 273: Making God Your CEO. You guys LOVED that episode, and today we have a special guest on to chat about doing business WITH the Lord. Today we have the honor of speaking with Zach Windahl.
Today we talked with Zach ALL about dreaming with God as an entrepreneur, how to tangibly go about inviting Him into your business, how to honor God through your work, and so much more. We went DEEP into how to hear God’s voice in life and business, and Zach brought TRUTH to anyone feeling lost on how to know what God’s saying. We then address the belief that going after your dreams is a selfish thing outside of God’s will, and how to handle failure and setbacks in your business when you’re seeking to walk with God.
Zach’s Story
Zach is a faith-based entrepreneur, author, and speaker with a mission to help others better understand the Bible and grow closer to God. Zach is most well-known for publishing The Bible Study: A One-Year Study of the Bible and How it Relates to You, which helps readers engage with the Bible like never before and has sold over 250,000 copies since being published in 2016. Passionate about helping people create holy habits, Zach founded The Brand Sunday, a company dedicated to providing resources that help people grow in their relationship with God, including planners, study journals, trivia books, icebreaker cards, and more. Zach strives to meet people wherever they are in their faith journey, from new believers to seasoned saints, to help them understand that faith does not need to be overwhelming and learn what it means to live a whole and holy life.
Dreaming with God
God wants to be involved in the process from the beginning to the end. How do you dream with God? You start with spending time in the word and in prayer. You don’t do all the talking, often in prayer we think we do all the talking, but you need to sit and listen to his voice and be tuned into what he is saying in your life. And even when it may sound crazy you need to be obedient because in that obedience is when God blesses it like crazy.
How to hear God’s voice:
It’s when you know in your knower. When you just know, that’s one way that God speaks to you. It can be through a random thought that pops up or an answer to a question all of a sudden. It can also be through God’s word, spending time in the Bible. The more that you hear his voice, the more decisions will make sense and you will be thinking from His mindset. The apostle Paul says to renew your mind. Which means thinking things through with God’s perspective.
Is it selfish to go after your dreams?
God puts dreams in our hearts for a reason. As long as your dreams line up with the heart of God, chase after it. God gets excited when we use the gifts that he has specifically placed in our lives to help others. Run after it and give all glory to God along the way. When He opens new doors, you need to let people know that it was all God.
Inviting God into your business
It means spending time in worship, reading the word every morning, and spending time in prayer. Take every business decision you have to God. We can make a logical decision ourselves, but often what God can do in a moment compared to what we can do in weeks doesn’t even compare. He can change everything in a second.
Every person is different. Figure out what is necessary for your life. Don’t approach it from a performative spirit, but for honor and trust knowing that is the best version of yourself.
Honoring God with your business
It can be done in many ways. For Zach what he was doing with the brand Sunday was helping people know and understand God and the Bible better. But some people don’t have a specific Bible-based business. If you’re a coffee shop you could serve fair trade coffee, pay your employees a fair wage, etc. Chick-fil-a doesn’t say they are closed on Sunday for their employees to go to church, but people know they are a Christian organization. Each business is in its lane. It might look a little different but there truly are ways to honor God in every business model.
Setbacks or failures in business
It happens all the time, one answer won’t suffice for all. The reason could be a list of things, maybe not hearing from God correctly, or maybe it was meant to be used as a lesson for the next thing. Be honest with the Lord and yourself. Did you work as hard as you should have? Did you spend enough time with God? Every entrepreneur will go through a list of failures, but it’s them not staying down but pushing forward that end up being successful.
It’s being okay with the small failures, knowing there might be something much bigger. Take every single situation big or little, failure or not, and see the silver lining and where God is moving.

What is the biggest lesson you have learned in business?
Everything takes much longer than you expect it to. Slow down you have so much time. Take it one day at a time and do one small thing every day.
