This episode is one of those down-to-earth conversations. Obviously, Black Friday was just a couple of weeks ago, and as we’ve been walking away from one of the biggest sales weekends (and often the most stressful weekend for business owners) of the whole year, our team and we have had some thoughts about Black Friday in general. So we figured, hey why not open the curtain and share some of our thoughts with you here?
So this won’t be perfectly polished with all answers found, but it should give you a little insight into the backend of our business, our thoughts as we plan for/look towards future Black Friday weekends, how the economy at the moment may or may not be affecting small businesses right now, and more!
HOW DID OUR LAUNCH GO?
It was our lowest by far of any Black Friday. This was the toughest by far as sales go. There are many reasons, especially with the economy and people protecting their money a little bit more than in the past. Inflation and the money that you do have is not going as far. Our strategy has always been to launch a new product as well, because if you just do a sale on whatever products that you have. Especially if there are a lot of elements, it is hard to pinpoint why you should buy one specific product.
This year we launched two brand new website templates and editorial template guides, and even with producing new content, it was way lower.
HOW DO WE VIEW BLACK FRIDAY?
There is a lot going on and every entrepreneur on earth feels the pressure to sell. If you own your own business there is pressure put on you to do a Black Friday sale because everyone is doing it. “It’s the thing to do”.
It forces you and your team to go into launch mode. It is intense and you’re putting a national holiday the day before go time. You are trying to sell at the most chaotic time of year, but there is a benefit to it but there’s a lot of noise. Even if you are not doing a sale on Black Friday, people are looking to buy regardless. They are waiting for those sales to buy.
WHAT ARE THE EXPECTATIONS OF BLACK FRIDAY?
It’s hard to be present with family but then also be active on a live launch. It doesn’t excite us or make us happy and doesn’t convert as much as other sales. We are considering the idea of boycotting us joining Black Friday sales in the future and doing something different. We are considering not doing Black Friday and doing something at another time of the year that will work better for our team and for our audience.
