Two Weeks Notice: Find the Courage to Quit Your Job, Make More Money, Work Where You Want, and Change the World
The inspiration was two-fold. Fourteen years ago when Amy left her last corporate job and started her online business she was clueless. She fumbled for about two years and it was one of the worst times because she felt so uncertain. So she wrote the book thet she wished she had when she was first starting out. Really how to leave a job, have a runway and also what to do when you are out on your own. Step by step on how to build an online business.
Amy also wrote it for another reason. There is a woman in a cubicle right now or fancy side office, but looks around and is hating her job thinking there is no way this is the rest of her life. She has hit that glass ceiling. Amy wrote the book for her to give her a new way to do life and business.
How Amy new she was “ready” to quit
Amy had been in 9-5 jobs ever since she left college and she was really good at having a boss. Amy liked to get the awards and promotions. She also loved to be told what to do and then do it even better. That structure worked for a long time until she got married, it had been about six months and she was working for Tony Robbins. Traveling a lot, very high stress but very rewarding, but she never saw her husband. Tony had brought it a bunch of online marketings and Amy was brought in to take notes, but all Amy heard was freedom. She didn’t know what they were doing but she wanted a piece of it. She had never called the shots and she wanted to. Amy wanted to create a business in her life by her own design.
What would you say are the first steps to creating an exit strategy?
Create a runway. The first thing you need to do is get very clear on your why. It can’t be a pageant why, it needs to be selfish. Amy wanted to not have a boss. The first time you put together your why, get very clear and it has to hit your soul.
Then from there choose an exit date. Amy wrote her exit date on a post-it note and put it on a mirror that she could see every day. When she saw it she would ask herself what does she need to do today to get her closer to leaving on that day. Every day do something to get you closer.
Money anxiety is going to come up for most of us. Get honest with your finances. How much money do you really need to make each month to get by. Then from there, make sure you tell three people and three people only. Not everybody deserves to hear your dreams, they cannot handle it. Be careful with who you tell, tell the people who will build you up, hold you accountable and push you out there if you get cold feet.
Start a side-hustle so then you can ease into leaving. And then stick to your leave date. Although you will be scared when you leave, you will have a plan.
Money anxiety
It is normal to have money anxiety when leaving your 9-5. A tactical thing you can do is to have a nest egg. The mindset of security and safety keeps you small. The more secure and safe you need to be the smaller game you will play in life and in business. If you are willing to get uncomfortable for a while, you will grow so much quicker than your competitors out there. Embracing being uncomfortable is a practice we need to put into place now.
Put a plan together but be willing to get uncomfortable.
What type of business or side hustle to start
You just need a starter idea. An idea that gets you into action, because action creates clarity. Allow yourself to start with a starter idea knowing that clarity and action will get you to where you are ultimately supposed to be.
- What are you good at? Where is your knowledge and skillset and know how? What do you friends think you are good at? Where have you gotten results, personally and professionally?
- Who do you want to serve?
- Where are people spending money? Are people spending money in this area where you want to start a business?
- What lights you up?
Those four steps will get you your starter idea.
What is your favorite book you’ve read recently?
The Gap and the Gain by Dan Sullivan
If you could go back and give yourself one piece of advice, what would it be?
Chill out. Every decision you make at the very beginning is not set in stone. You will mess up so much and you will still be standing there.
What is the biggest lesson you have learned in business?
My expectations are not reality. You can only control one side of the street and not how someone is going to show up.
