What do I do if I’m not getting booked?
Right? You got into business to serve clients like the rockstar you are doing what you love, but what happens when it FEELS like you’re doing all the things only to be met with crickets in your inbox? OR worse, potential clients ghost you when you respond to their inquiries. YIKES.
Well friend there’s a LOT to unpack with this question because the answer isn’t just a one size fits all situation. There’s a variety of factors at play that could be causing your inbox to be the Sahara desert. Today we are giving you a bunch of questions to ask yourself about what you may be doing or not doing in your business and marketing that COULD potentially be the cause of your booking woes.
Are you showcasing what you want to continue booking? Is your photo work or client work that you’re blasting in marketing everywhere what you want to continue booking? If not, a slower season without bookings is a great time to set up some free or discounted sessions or work so you can build up your dream portfolio that will speak directly to your ideal clients!
This is a two-fold doozy. The first part of this question focuses on your service and education. Showcasing your expertise and experience and value to your ideal clients. This can look like tips like:
Why share this stuff? It positions you as an expert in your industry. It’s content that helps you get seen by your potential clients because it’s things they care about and want answers to anyway. And it helps build trust with potential clients if you’re giving them incredibly helpful FREE content that is relevant to what they want (and what you do) BEFORE they hire you.
The second part is showcasing the HUMAN being behind your business: AKA you. YOU are the unique factor in your business. And we’ve said this a million times on this show, but you could have the exact same process as someone else, the same product, the same experience, the same price, etc. but still, someone will choose YOU over another purely because they connect and value working with YOU. So show it.
The more you show up, the more you stay on top of mind. You want to showcase not only your work but also your workflow, your experience, YOU, etc! The point is just to stay consistent! Don’t sit by and twiddle your thumbs wishing you’d get more inquiries while you blog once every 6 months, don’t use Pinterest, and post to Instagram once a month.
Are your follow-up emails written in a way that encourages a response or are they easily deletable and forgettable? You’re always going to get ghosted. That still happens to us occasionally, but a good follow-up email can help limit this. Are you making your next step communication as EASY as possible for someone to understand how to book with you as well as actually take those next steps? Example: sending a Calendly link to book a call verse asking when they’re available only to go back and forth a million times nailing down a time/day.
If you aren’t getting booked and you don’t have work coming in, then are you going out and MAKING free work yourself? And subsequently, showcasing your work (even if it’s for free) on your online platforms? Show you creating your product or service. Show what the process looks like. Invite them in and share via Instagram stories, Reels, Tik Toks, etc.
This goes back to the timeless StoryBrand marketing principle. Your marketing in your business really shouldn’t be about you. It should be about THEM and THEIR goals. You’re the guide who’s gonna help the hero (your clients) get to their end goal. Not the other way around. Showing up with authority, expertise, tips, and strategies, identifying exactly where your ideal client is and where they’re wanting to go, etc.
