Today’s conversation is with one of our good friends Ivan Amssan all on personal branding.
Ivan broke down some misconceptions around what personal branding is, what it looks like, and who it is and isn’t for then he began to SPIT FIREEE on how to practically go about approaching building a personal brand for yourself, what to share and what not to share, how to create boundaries within a personal brand, and SO much more.
Ivan’s Story
Ivan is the lead photographer and visionary at Ivan Amssan {AM-SIN} Photography Co, a wedding photography team serving the Midwest and nationally. He believes in creating a present wedding experience for newly engaged couples through the art of relationship building. Ivan is also an educator that focuses on creating resources and in-person educational experiences that empower photographers to lead and live intentional businesses and lives; all while sharing Jesus.
What is personal branding?
A personal brand is using your image, your life, your personality, and your perspective to make your product and service feel a certain way. What that is hopefully doing is drawing people to your business because they are hopefully attracted to you. All in all, it’s simply using who you are to attract people who are attracted to that who are attracted to your service or product.
Ivan’s thoughts on personal branding
It’s not like you are leveraging or manipulating your life in a certain way to get people to buy your product but we can truly live in a world of freedom when we know the boundaries for things. And we know what boundaries we can break. If everything is free for all, we will have analysis paralysis on what to do and what to share.
What is the biggest most high-level purpose of your business? Then when you go through mediums of marketing your business (not just social media) blog, website, and in-person interaction. What are your content pillars or brand pillars that help you achieve the bigger goal? You will share specifically in those pillars.
Personal boundaries
If it’s an active wound Ivan hasn’t processed yet, there’s a good chance he’s not going to share it. He will take a good amount of time to process whether or not he wants to share or how he will share. Turn things into true encouragement. True encouragement is sharing a testimony to stir up encouragement in someone else. Ivan won’t share something on Instagram to receive pity for a time to process. At that point, it is a matter of transparency and not vulnerability.
What is your favorite book you’ve read recently?
Rocket Fuel by Geno Wickman
The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas
What is the biggest lesson you have learned in business?
I would not be where I am without prioritizing my relationship with Jesus, above everything. Everything that we do in our businesses should be done by planning. The power of planning is the way that makes things work.
