If you’re a mother or want to be one someday, you NEED to listen to this episode, especially if you’re a business owner too. We had our dear friend Adison Childers on today’s episode to share her experience on a topic that no one is talking about– quitting a successful entrepreneurial business to become a full-time stay-at-home mom.
Today we had a raw, long, and heartfelt conversation with Adison about her experience in closing down her successful design business to step into motherhood. We discuss how and why she came to that decision, what the transition has looked like for her and what she wishes other women feeling that tug would know about this decision. Adison shared the guilt and tension she felt between either letting her clients or her family down as she tried to juggle business & motherhood and what life looks like for her now. We then discuss girl boss culture, the feminist movement, and how those two have so deeply affected women & motherhood today.
Adison’s Story
Adison Childers has always been known as the designer, and strategist behind Amina Studios, a branding and website design studio, or as the host of the The Balance Podcast. She’s also been blessed with the opportunities to design and work with some of the largest names in the entrepreneurial space, and has worked with dream clients worldwide. However, in June of 2022 God began a work in her heart as she welcomed her first daughter into the world, and she has since made a radical decision. To lay it all down, her successful design career, her rapidly growing podcast, and a piece of her family’s income to follow her God-given vocation as a mother, homemaker, and wife. What once looked like client calls, an overrun computer, and a mile long to-do list — now looks more like raising her babies in the beautiful upstate of South Carolina, recovering the many lost arts of homemaking, and practicing biblical womanhood as a Daughter, wife, mother, and friend.
The Transition
The transition out of business was hard and Adison has kept on only two clients and will only work with them very minimally. Adison didn’t want to be disobedient to God but felt good keeping on business with minimal clients sporadically throughout the year. It looks very different right now. She doesn’t have a Honeybook, website, or anything of that, so it doesn’t feel like a business anymore, more so contracting out.
The transition out of business was so difficult because she was faced with God telling her to lay it down, but she had clients, responsibilities, and relationships with people.
The hardest part for Adison was not letting go of her actual work but letting down people.
Letting go of the identity of being a successful entrepreneur
Adison never made 6-figures in her business. She never reached a certain point she thought she needed to be successful in her business. She had a beautiful business and worked with amazing people. Never making 6-figures or getting a million downloads on her podcast, she never hit the milestones that you hear people making in order to be a successful business. Adison didn’t do any of those and that’s totally fine. It was really hard to lay it down and not think she had anything to show for it, but that was all pride talking. When she looks back all she sees is the people.
Thoughts on navigating this transition what may have felt like “alone”
Everyone will not see it as a failure. If you are a mom you should consider if you should stay at home or be part-time. It should at least be a thought. Are you letting fear dictate your choices? God created us in His image and it is in us to be nurturing, so why not consider and ask yourself what God is calling you to do?
