Friend, if you are feeling over it, burnt out, overwhelmed as heck, and honestly drowning in your business, be it because it’s not financially working or it’s taking a toll on your emotional health. This episode today is going to be your life raft. We had our girl Shay Cochrane back on the show.
In today’s episode we go DEEP on a topic that we need to talk about today in the entrepreneur space: burnout, overwhelm, and considering throwing in the towel and calling it quits on these businesses of ours.
So if you need to hear TRUTH and encouragement for your exact season: listen close today.
Shay’s Story
She’s the founder of Elevae Visuals (formerly known as Social Squares). Shay puts her years of work as a commercial stylist and photographer into a highly curated stock membership that supplies elevated images + video for online brands. Her vision is to enable more women to find greater success sharing their ideas and businesses with the world but what really sets her apart is that this “16 hr CEO” does all of this in just two days a week!
Current entrepreneurial landscape
Everyone’s experience is different. Anything is possible right now but a lot of people are discouraged and exhausted. For the past 10 years, we’ve been told/shown one way of doing things (hustle, be everywhere, personal brands win, everyone needs to make six figures to be successful, etc) and we’re just now starting to see the toll that it takes at all levels of entrepreneurs all the way up to the uber-successful 7 and 8 figure entrepreneurs.
What would say is the root cause of those feelings for many entrepreneurs?
There are often times economic factors, but we all saw only one particular way of doing things. Hustling and grinding. At the heart of it, people are getting burnt out because the one way we saw to do it isn’t working. Then we start questioning if we want to keep doing it. We haven’t seen another way to do it, meaning build a business and have a healthy life. We haven’t seen good models in how to do that well and be successful financially.
Good growth is born through tension.
It’s technically working financially or it’s not
Let’s say it’s working financially: how do you ever know you are making enough, we live in a culture of always wanting more. Financial success is probably less money than you think it is for you. Why did you start a business in the first place? You need to prioritize the order of those things. The order does matter.
It’s not working financially: you’ve been at it for a very long time and are barely breaking even. A lot of people are not succeeding as entrepreneurs profit-wise because they are spending the majority of their time on things that don’t actually matter. Eighty percent of your hours are only producing 20% of your revenue and only 20% of what you are doing is generating 80% of the revenue.
Shay’s Encouragement
Friend, you get to decide what this looks like. We are not victims of our businesses of the industry, the economy, or our competitors. You get to decide the way life looks and what work looks like. You get to decide how much you are willing to sacrifice to be financially success. You get to decide what work you do. We think we have to do so much. We think it has to look a certain way and we think when we see others doing it that way, we’re supposed to do it too. The reality is you only know yourself and what you need. There are endless ways to make money. Endless ways to create wealth for your family.
What is your favorite book you’ve read recently?
The Art of Impossible by Steven Kotler
What is the biggest lesson you have learned in business?
You have to go slow to go fast. The premise behind that is busyness is your worst enemy. You go fast when you slow down enough to be thoughtful and intentional. That actually is what leads to success and progress.
