Today, we’re going there. As you probably read from the title of today’s show. We’re having a good ole friendly debate on the value and benefit of college specifically when it comes to entrepreneurs.
And joining us for the discussion is the lovely, Tyrie Mehaffey. Soooo in today’s debate-style episode, Tyrie firmly stands on “Camp College,” advocating for the benefits of higher education, while we’re on the opposing side, suggesting that college might not always be worth the debt, and there may be alternative ways to continue education and gain life experiences. Join us for this lively discussion as we explore the pros and cons, share personal experiences, and have some fun here today.
Tyrie’s Story
Tyrie is a Texas-based wedding photographer who creates personality-driven, colorful, detail-oriented, vivacious wedding photos that feel like joy and goodness. She started her business ten years ago when she was fourteen and went full time upon college graduation. She is passionate about taking entrepreneurship seriously in your early 20’s because of the gift it has been in her life, and loves the blend of analytical and creative that wedding photography is. Outside of work, Tyrie loves feta, Red (Taylor’s Version), American history, reading, and has made eye contact with Harry Styles 7 times.
Why do you think college IS valuable for business owners?
In the photography industry, there is this prescribed path of not going to college, dropping out, or quitting your nine-to-five. You book too much at prices too low, then you get burnt out. Then you raise your prices and book less. Then you go down the education field and build your associates team, and that’s the prescribed path.
Having a college degree allows more options down the road. You can love something best when you have the freedom to not love it. Something like dropping out of college to pursue photography might make you hate it in the long run.
The Value
The value of college is less about checking boxes studying finance and learning these skills to work at a bank. More about how it forms your mind and you as a person. Deepening your well that you can draw from. Tyrie would say it’s not necessary but it is valuable.
There is value in cohabiting with people and learning how to do life with people from all different walks. teaching you so many life skills that will benefit you in the future. Also as a wedding photographer, you have the most clients right at your fingertips with all your classmates around you.
Why a Photographer
The more and more she invested in her business, the more she loved it. When she started looking at jobs during her senior year, she realized she didn’t want to do anything else.
What is your favorite book you’ve read recently?
Silas Marner by George Eliot
What is the biggest lesson you have learned in business?
Practically the importance of having good systems in place. So that you’re not stressed bt your job.
Spiritually, not making your business ownership your identity.
