This is our first podcast episode on brand photography. We talk about why she made the pivot, how she stands out, what it looks like logistically, how to get noticed by other brands, etc. There is so much that Abbey delivers today and we can’t wait to dive into this episode.
Abbey’s Show
Abbey is a full-time brand + fashion photographer based in San Diego, CA. She started out as a wedding photographer where she spent six incredible years serving amazing couples for their engagements, weddings, and elopements. In 2022 Abbey decided to completely make the switch to brand + product photography. Since then, she has had the privilege of working with many different companies by providing them with lifestyle and editorial campaigns. Since starting her brand photography journey, Abbey has worked with clients such as: Cozy Earth, Sackcloth x Ashes, The Salty Gem, Kosha Fit, Our Spare Change, Boobie SuperFoods, and Long Wknd.
Do you pitch yourself to brands?
She has pitched herself and brands have come to her. The one thing she is truly trying to navigate is to pitch herself and land the pitch. Abbey has found for her personally, pitching has been more on the backend for her. Abbey does tons of test shoots all the time and what she would want to be hired for. She puts it everywhere, when she does it consistently she will get regular brand inquiries. She’s had brands find her through Instagram and reach out to her to do work for them.
What are some of your top tips for posing as a solo model?
Location can play a big part in this. But it’s trying to see the product in a new way. You want to get the details but also the overall vibe and ascetic that they are asking for. Abbey tries to focus on the product and not the model to capture what they are looking for.
What’s one of the best ways to get noticed by brands?
The first one would be to keep putting your creative work out. Put stuff on Instagram, Pinterest, website, TikTok, etc. This has been one of the biggest ways she’s utilized to get noticed by brands. Brands have found her through hashtags, they are still working!
Abbey also promotes a lot of her posts with mini ads. With test shoots that she’s done, she will promote a post if she sees it is doing well. She’ll promote it for a week and has created her own audience on Instagram of photographers and one specifically for brands.
What to include in a pitch email:
The shorter the better. The more you get straight to the point and what you can do for them the better. They don’t want to know about your life story. Keep it short and sweet. Do research about the brand talk about what you love about the brand and then talk about what you can do for them.
What is your favorite book you’ve read recently?
Everybody Always by Bob Goff
Art in Fear by David Bayles
What is the biggest lesson you have learned in business?
You have to do it scared. No matter if you’re going to be scared you just have to do it. Your competitors will also become your biggest asset. This is something that can help you excel. Your competitors can also help you get your biggest job.
