If you ever thought about getting into podcasting, or the backend of your podcast, or do you want the insane tea of the behind-the-scenes of ours? Listen. Today we had the joy of having our audio engineer– Hayden Doerr. He demystifies the allure that you make buckets of money you can make, the mistakes he sees, the things he sees doing well, and how to have a great podcast from the start!
Hayden’s Story
Hayden Doerr is the Founder and CEO of July Media Labs – a podcast and media production company based out of Dallas, Texas. He has over 10 years of experience working in the audio engineering and media production industry. After years of recording, mixing, and mastering metal music Hayden had the realization “Why do so many podcasts that I love SOUND horrible?!” That was the spark that ignited the flame. From there, Hayden transitioned his business from recording music into focusing on podcast production. He now has a massively successful podcast production and audio engineering business serving podcasters around the globe.
What are the top mistakes you see with new podcasts or people just getting into podcasting?
The striving for perfection with the recordings. You are putting so much pressure on yourself instead of just being in the conversation.
The fear of preparation where they won’t start because they’re scared of what it might take to get a full setup. The barrier to entry is not too extreme.
What are the top tips to do?
Don’t rush it. Don’t rush the beginning. Get a back long. Have at least three episodes. Three weeks to a month backlog is good to start.
What are your fav gear recommendations?
Beginner:
Shure MV7
Mid-tier:
Shure SM7dB
When is a good time to hire someone to manage or edit your show?
If you already have a brand and company, spending ten hours a week editing is much more useful. On episode subject and guest outreach. And let someone else do the editing for you. If all you have to do is show up and be the host, it can make it a lot easier.
Realistic realization down to zero
People think they can make money from their podcasts. Hayden has more clients who don’t make money than those who do. Look at it as a marketing leg for their company.
What is your favorite book you’ve read recently?
The Creative Act: The Way of Being by Rick Rubin
What is the biggest lesson you have learned in business?
Don’t hold back, just actually go for it and do it.
