Today we’re chatting about the money mindset from a Biblical perspective. If you’ve ever struggled with a love of money or a fear of money. If you’ve struggled to charge what you think you should because you’re trying to stay “humble,”. If you struggle with thinking that you never have enough money and that you’re always lacking in it. AND If you believe that as a Christian you should ONLY be making enough money to barely break even and that’s it, this episode is for you my friend!
It’s a NEUTRAL tool. It’s the LOVE of money that becomes the problem. It’s the focus of our hearts that become the problem.
So many believers are familiar with the verse from 1 Timothy 6:10 that says “For the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil.” The thing to note here is the keyword: LOVE. The LOVE of money. Not MONEY ITSELF.
God tells us that you can’t serve and love two masters: God and money. Money is neutral, it is the heart posture that turns it evil. Without turning this into a sermon or pretending we’re pastors, here’s what we see over and over and over in scripture as you dive into the concept of money as a believer.
God’s not anti-wealth. God is anti-WORSHIPPING wealth.
There are DOZENS upon DOZENS of stories, people, parables, and situations in the Bible where God blesses people with financial abundance and provision. The thing you’ll notice over and over is that God warns us not to worship money or place it on a throne above Him.
Money is a TOOL. A resource we can harness and use to further God’s kingdom and impact the world around us for His glory. It’s not bad. It’s not holy. It’s a neutral tool that we can steward well.
The parable from Luke 19:12-26:
19And he said likewise to him, Be thou also over five cities. 20And another came, saying, Lord, behold, here is thy pound, which I have kept laid up in a napkin: 21for I feared thee, because thou art an austere man: thou takest up that thou layedst not down, and reapest that thou didst not sow. 22And he saith unto him, Out of thine own mouth will I judge thee, thou wicked servant. Thou knewest that I was an austere man, taking up that I laid not down, and reaping that I did not sow: 23wherefore then gavest not thou my money into the bank, that at my coming I might have required mine own with usury? 24And he said unto them that stood by, Take from him the pound, and give it to him that hath ten pounds. 25(And they said unto him, Lord, he hath ten pounds.) 26For I say unto you, That unto every one which hath shall be given; and from him that hath not, even that he hath shall be taken away from him.
God WANTS us to take what He gives us, steward it and take care of it well, and grow it. He rewards those who treat it well as He has already given them with wisdom. That’s why He took the one who buried his mina in the ground and gave it to the one with 10 minas. God gives us resources and it is our job to steward them. Multiply it. To take advantage and be strategic with what God has given us.
How can we apply this to our businesses and our lives?
Honor God by thanking Him for what He’s given you.
How can you thank Him with your money?
Understanding that the money you have is HIS. Not yours. It has been gifted and blessed unto you as a steward of it. One of the best ways to keep the mindset that this is God’s first and not mine is:
It is NOT bad to grow the resources God has given you. If you have a business that means it is not bad to charge a price for a service you’re giving in return. You’re taking the talents and skills God has given you and turning them into more fruit. The mindset that money is bad and as Christians, we shouldn’t make it out of a striving to be humble is off. When you treat money as a resource to bless others you’re stewarding the resources and finances God has given you.
What is a scarcity mindset?: It’s the belief that there isn’t enough (and never will be enough) that results in constantly viewing the world (or a certain area, ex: money) as if there’s always a lack.
Here’s the major problem with this mindset:
Like the parable of the minas in Luke 19 that we mentioned before, the person who went and hid the money, operating out of a scarcity/fear-based mindset, not only did they not increase that money, but God took it away. He said that mindset was leading to poor stewardship, and gave it to the person who was stewarding their resources well.
If you’re struggling with a scarcity mindset, try memorizing some bible verses (Like Matthew 6, Philippians 4:19, etc) and speaking those over yourself whenever you feel anxious. And surrender yourself and your finances back to the Lord, remembering that HE is in charge and worthy of all praise, not money.
How is it humble to charge a premium price as a believer? Shouldn’t we prioritize giving over taking?
It’s not robbing someone or stealing if you charge a premium price for something in exchange for a premium product or service. That’s good business. Now if you charge a premium price for something and are giving a crappy service or product that isn’t worth the price you’re charging, then that’s unethical.
Making money in and of itself is NOT bad. Charging for something worth that money and providing for your family is Biblical. We need to stop this mindset that says “oh I’m not going to charge people because it’s better to be humble” to the point that you’re not valuing or stewarding the gifts and talents God has given you.
Proverbs 31:13-29:
13She seeketh wool, and flax,
And worketh willingly with her hands.
14She is like the merchants’ ships;
She bringeth her food from afar.
15She riseth also while it is yet night,
And giveth meat to her household,
And a portion to her maidens.
16She considereth a field, and buyeth it:
With the fruit of her hands she planteth a vineyard.
17She girdeth her loins with strength,
And strengtheneth her arms.
18She perceiveth that her merchandise is good:
Her candle goeth not out by night.
19She layeth her hands to the spindle,
And her hands hold the distaff.
20She stretcheth out her hand to the poor;
Yea, she reacheth forth her hands to the needy.
21She is not afraid of the snow for her household:
For all her household are clothed with scarlet.
22She maketh herself coverings of tapestry;
Her clothing is silk and purple.
23Her husband is known in the gates,
When he sitteth among the elders of the land.
24She maketh fine linen, and selleth it;
And delivereth girdles unto the merchant.
25Strength and honour are her clothing;
And she shall rejoice in time to come.
26She openeth her mouth with wisdom;
And in her tongue is the law of kindness.
27She looketh well to the ways of her household,
And eateth not the bread of idleness.
28Her children arise up, and call her blessed;
Her husband also, and he praiseth her.
29Many daughters have done virtuously,
But thou excellest them all.
There are so many other examples in the Bible, but the point is not women versus men. We are trying to say the prime example in the Bible of a godly woman is earning significant money and providing for her family.
The love of money is a problem, however, money is not the problem.
