Today we are losing our minds grateful to have the incredible Bob Goff on the show.
Bob Goff is the author of the New York Times bestselling books Love Does and Everybody, Always and Dream Big. He is the Honorary Consul to the Republic of Uganda, an attorney, and the founder of Love Does—a nonprofit human rights organization operating in Uganda, India, Nepal, Iraq, and Somalia. He’s a lover of balloons, cake pops, and helping people pursue their big dreams. You can typically find Bob writing and taking calls from his boat, welcoming people to his Southern California retreat center- The Oaks, or at an event speaking.
Today we bring a list of questions to Bob that were submitted by YOU, our listeners. We cover everything from how to have powerful, healthy relationships, how to know how to set healthy boundaries in life vs how to love others through availability, and how to find discernment in what you say yes to. The conversation just kept going with how to invite Jesus into your dreams, Bob’s advice on how small businesses can love and bless others, and how to maintain your whimsey when the world feels heavy and hard.
This episode is so full of life, overflowing with love and truth and we promise will be an episode you’ll want to repeat to catch all the wisdom given by Bob today. (Speaking of giving, Bob even shares a San Quentin prison cheesecake recipe for ya in between all the truth bombs )
If you’re ready to get a jolt of joy and passion back into your life, you’re in the right place. Let’s get started with today’s conversation!
A lawyer by training who never lost a case in 32 years. It wasn’t because I was a good lawyer, it’s because I was a good picker. At some point, I realized I was just helping wealthy people. What I wanted to do was make an impact that would be a little more lasting. My kids were like 6, 8, and 10 at the time and I was seeing kids their age being bought and sold in developing countries and it ticked me off. I decided to get some skin in the game, I asked a bunch of outfits if I could work for them for nothing, but everybody said the same thing…no.
Rather than getting off the scent, we decided to start our own thing and we called it Love Does. I was a pretty good lawyer but I was better at building expensive schools I couldn’t pay for. I was putting 20,000 a month against my house just to pay to build them. Right about then a publisher asked if I would write a book and I asked in return if they would build a school? I told them I would trade them one book for one school. They said tell us about this school, I said 1,600 child soldiers in Uganda and 400 teachers. They said wow big school, I said big book. They gave me an advance and we built a school and then sold 3 million more books.
I started writing books because I couldn’t afford my habit of starting schools.
You can make some guard rails. I probably receive about 100 calls a day from the back of the book. I don’t make calls. I receive calls. With emails I probably get 200-300 a day, I answer all of them.
The through-line is love, when you try something you set up a guardrail and think why do you do that. I don’t make appointments with people because inevitably they end up getting broken. It is an odd day when I make an appointment with someone. Instead, I do, here’s my phone number, here’s my email and if I can help you out, give me a shout. Come up with some guardrails that serve you, but don’t be a primadonna, ask yourself why those things.
Have a plan, if you have hope without a plan, it’s just a wish. You can hope for something, but then what’s the plan?
There is a great verse, Hebrews 11:1, “Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see”. First of all, you need to know what you are hoping for.
You find access with your faith to big beautiful dreams that God’s given you. Even though you haven’t seen it, have confidence in what might emerge.
I don’t. I have yet to hear it. I am 62 and crickets. I think this whole underlying idea is God doesn’t pass us notes, He gives us each other.
Another way I do it is by reading scripture. Scripture is the voice of God, it might sound a lot like you but if you read what the scriptures say that is what God thinks about things.
That doesn’t mean that’s the end of it, dig a little deeper and ask how does that intersect with what’s going on. Dive deep into the scriptures and you’ll hear God’s voice.
Do beautiful things. It isn’t this kind of thing where you make a lot of money, do beautiful things with it. Do awesome things with excellence and then live a sacrificial commital life and you’ll know what to do with it. Think of big beautiful legacy things for your family, what you want to be remembered for, nobody needs to see your face on a billboard. Don’t exaggerate the losses or the victories, just keep showing up. Be strategic and start thinking of your job as fundraising.
Feel the full range of emotions but do it in an emotionally healthy way. We can have gears but we don’t need to assume the role that you’re the guy that’s mister justice or intense person. We all have gears that we can be.
Be aware of the good that is still happening around you.
A couple of things I tried that didn’t work, I probably wouldn’t have done those. I bought a house in Washington DC in Capital Hill and just wanted these people who were running our government to get along. We didn’t put a name on it, it was across the street from the supreme court. For years and years, it was open for people just to be together from the different branches of government. Then something changes and everybody stopped coming, then the real estate market crashed and sold it and lost so much money. Would I do that again, heck no!
I want to fail trying, I don’t want to fail watching. A lot of people are failing watching, but get some skin in the game.
I learned that it will work. There are quite a few things that will work that you wouldn’t think would work but it works. What if we thought that God wants to surprise us. I believe that God knows everything that has happened, is happening and is going to happen. Here’s the deal, the angels don’t, they only know what God tells them.
God wants to blow your doors away. This isn’t your take on it, He wants to do exceedingly and abundantly more than you could ever dream or imagine. As God knows how this will turn out, the angels don’t. You want to dazzle the angels, lean into it. You want to dazzle God, be obedient. That’s it, that is what dazzles God every time.
