Dan Henry went from selling water bottles on the side of the road to an 8 Figure Earner by selling his advice online. Dan is a Wall Street Journal, Amazon & USA Today Bestselling Author who’s sold over $15 million of his own digital products and has been instrumental in helping to create several internet millionaires. He’s been featured in Forbes, Entrepreneur Magazine, Business Insider, and more. If you’re an entrepreneur of any kind, you’ve undoubtedly seen his ads on your Facebook timeline.
We sat down and had an open, candid conversation about the mindset shifts you have to make in order to truly become successful. Dan isn’t afraid of offending anyone, and if you’re trying to build a life you love, you NEED what he has to say. He tells a story of the latest conference he attended and what the difference was in conversations at a table full of 6 & 7 figure entrepreneurs, vs a table full of 8 figure entrepreneurs.
We also get into the fear behind knowing when to get into coaching, mentoring, and selling your knowledge online. He tackles the lie holding many people back of “I’m not qualified enough to teach.” At the end of the episode, we even ask Dan a personal question we have within our own education company: ‘how do you get people to consume your entire course?’.
The answer is not something people want to hear. It’s not something they are comfortable with. It’s not something they were told as a child that made them all warm and fuzzy.
This is what happens, you decide you want to start a business and get into the internet marketing world. You go out and register for all these webinars, buy all these books, courses, and they all tell you the same thing. Do you want to be a millionaire? Follow this simple script, use this simple funnel, this system, and on and on. That’s all completely false. The one thing that makes all of those things work: doing it well.
We all want to have a nice car, a watch, a house, a successful business, have time to travel, be productive. We want to have all these things. This is what we want to have and that is the problem. People are always focusing on what they want to have instead of becoming the person that deserves those things and can make them happen. We are not called human havings, we are called human beings.
You can study all the productivity hacks, techniques, and applications you want, but that’s not going to make you productive. Being a productive person is going to make you productive. A productive person gets good sleep, they exercise daily to keep their activity level up so that their mind has a heightened focus, awareness, and concentration. If you lay on the couch and eat ice cream every day, if you treat your body like crap, your body is not going to function. Just like a car if you don’t change the oil.
People don’t want to hear that. They want to hear it is this app and they can download that. When you want to succeed at things you will learn that all those things that are unsexy, that don’t sound sexy, those are the things that actually work.
Attending a click funnels conference, Dan was sitting at a table of business owners that all made eight-figures. The previous day he hosted a round table with seven-figure business owners. The biggest difference at the start-up, six or seven-figure table it was all about what do you do for this email sequence, for this funnel, and all this superficial level stuff. While at the eight-figure table they are discussing how they are maximizing their sleep. Sitting at the table with Pat June, Dan asked him why he wore the same outfit every day? He proceeds to tell him that he does it because Steve Jobs did it and Steve did it because he found when he got up in the morning and was deciding what to wear for the day, that it took fifteen minutes out of his day figuring out what to wear. So what he did was he bought the same shirts and pants, he lined them up in the closet and he wears the same thing every day.
So you know what Dan went out and did? He went out and bought fifty black v-necks and started doing it too. It has saved him a ton of time and he doesn’t have to think about what to wear.
The main point is the conversations at each table were very different. Instead of trying to learn how to be rich, wealthy, or successful. Start acting like somebody that is successful. Start thinking like somebody that is rich and successful. And then everything else falls into place. Part of the mindset is that any funnel will work if you do it well. In order to do things well, you have to have a lifestyle, behavior, and habits that allow you to do a good job at things.
There is a test you can do. There’s an exercise called the 1% rule. For every offer, there are layers upon layers of different types of people that relate. For instance, two people could sell the same offer, but because one is male and one is female. More males will gravitate towards the male and more females to the female.
There are so many people out there that are willing to pay for someone that is one step ahead and in many cases prefer just one step ahead because fifty steps ahead is far too intimidating. They don’t think that that person can recall what it’s like to be only one step ahead or in the beginning.
People pay 100,000 dollars to go to college to learn something that really isn’t going to do much for them unless you are a doctor or lawyer. When somebody wants to learn something online and you’re charging a fraction of what college is charging and you know how to do something that they don’t. That’s all you need.
Here’s how you test this, go on your Facebook and say, “Hey guys you may or may not know this but in the past I have (insert- something you’ve done or know how to do) would anybody be interested in learning how to do this? I thought about putting together a free training video showing you how to do this, would anybody interested? Comment yes below. ”. Either people don’t want to learn that and nobody’s going to comment or people are going to love to learn that and a bunch of people are going to comment.
Now here’s the one percent rule. If there is an audience willing to take time to consume your content for free then there will always be a percentage of that audience willing to pay for that content in greater detail. If you look at the amount of people on Dan’s email list, only about one percent buy. One percent, so if he can build a life like that off of one percent, imagine how much money you are losing by not starting your journey because you think it should be fifty percent or twenty percent.
We don’t charge enough.
When someone pays a small portion for a course they won’t pay as much attention to it. Whereas when you are invested in the course, you want to get your money’s worth. You need to have enough skin in the game.
Always interview your students and encourage them to share their wins. We don’t only share it with our email list to get more customers but also within the group. You’d be surprised to see when someone in the group sees someone like them be successful and inspires them to do that same.
You have to constantly nurture and expose the wins because sometimes it just takes that one teeny tiny thing to push somebody over the edge to take action. It’s one thing to take money from their credit card but it’s another thing to get them to take action.
The third thing, never ever think that when they buy your course you have to stop storytelling. Here is what you’re going to learn, here is why it is important, here’s an example of what it’s done for me or my student to inspire them to pay attention, and then teach them step-by-step. Then end with yet another example. You have to keep selling even after you have sold. It is harder to sell someone to get off their butt and take action than it is to give you their credit card number. You have to keep doing your job and selling people to take action.
