Today we’re chatting ALL about Instagram by playing a fun little game called Overrated vs. Underrated.
If you’ve seen this trend going around on the internet, it’s where people are picking a topic (like movies, fashion, things in their industry, etc.)
We asked YOU, what topics you wanted ys to cover and you gave us a TON! From Instagram reels, guides, stories, giveaways, polls, and more we’re sharing our thoughts on them ALL.
Today you’ll learn which aspects of Instagram should you forget cause they’re mega overrated, and which should you start paying more attention to because it’s, way underrated.
You asked. We delivered. Let’s dig on in!
Underrated. However, you want to stay consistent and it’s not every week you are taking five days off. When people try to take too much time, that’s when it is overrated. In general, it is healthy. We need rest. Especially as creative entrepreneurs, Instagram can be exhausting. That’s why so many business owners burn out so quickly. You should and have permission to take those breaks but also keep in mind consistently posting on social media will help with your growth. Find the balance of breaks versus consistency.
This can be summed up as giveaways. We can see why people think they are overrated because so many people are doing them. At the same time from the perspective of the creative, trying to grow a platform, the reason you see so many of them is because they work. It depends on how well you do it, what’s the price, and how many people you have to follow.
From a consumer’s perspective seeing a ton of these going around it probably feels very overrated. From a creatives perspective, it is underrated.
Extremely underrated. People should utilize them better. People forget about them because we don’t see when people watch them unless they DM you from them. They are underrated because highlights are a powerful way to create that stalkable binge-able content. Only if you have them categorized properly with valuable content that shows who you are and who you serve.
A lot of people click on highlights when they first find a new person. It shows you in the quickest way what type of content you can expect from them. A lot of people when they are creating their highlights, don’t think about how someone is going to view them when they first hop on your page. Go to your highlights and watch all of them, clean them up and view them as someone who is brand new just seeing your page. Highlights overall are very underrated.
We are assuming that means selling a product directly on a Reel. We think overrated and here is why. Reels are not the place to sell because you are showing up to a cold audience. Reels are the place to entertain, educate and get people’s attention. Get them to like you and hop over to your account. That is not the place to sell them because you have never served them.
Think of a funnel, Reels are the place where people are going to discover, then come to your page and find that stalkable, binge-worthy content in your highlights, posts, or carousels. Then they are going to continue to absorb your content for a while before they are ready to purchase or buy.
It depends on the Reel. If it is an education Reel and with 30 seconds it is not a lot of time to put valuable content in to serve your clients. Utilize the Reel to grab their attention and tell them for more information or content read the caption.
If it is quick, funny, entertaining, or personal, less education leans more towards a shorter caption. Do not over caption your funny Reels.
They are not overrated but properly rated. They are still helpful, especially with Reels there is a section just for hashtags. However Reels are popping and Instagram is pushing them, so hashtags aren’t the number one thing driving them. Hashtags are still relevant but not everything.
Way underrated, people need to get on IGTV. People gravitate more towards Reels because it is shorter and people like shorter form content. IGTVs don’t usually go viral but they serve the audience that is dedicated to you so well. Especially for longer-form content.
IGTV is one of those stalkable binge-able content that people can watch.
There are ways to repurpose live videos or story series and then turning them into IGTVs. They are underrated.
They overrated because they never got big enough to be underrated. They came right out after Reels and Reels was such a big thing and still is. Guides are great to compile like-minded content and similar topics. Your Reels, captions in posts, IGTV’s.
It’s not necessarily a marketing tool it’s compiling your information in one spot for your audience so that it is easily digestible for them. Guides are a little overrated but we think they might pop after Reels calm down.
Long captions are underrated. And short captions are overrated. If you want followers and consistency you need to give value. You need to give them stories and entertainment and typically that is easier with a longer caption.
If you are looking to start writing longer captions and people aren’t reading them it is because you haven’t done it in a while and you need to warm up your audience.
Highly underrated. Story all the time. One of the most powerful tools on Instagram is showing up face to face. If you’re not showing up on your stories then you will not grow. If you want to grow and have a platform you need to story.
Properly rated. They are not overused or underused. They are a great way to get engagement and encourage people. Invite people into a game. It is easy, you’re not asking them to do a huge thing. You’re getting easy engagement.
Overrated. It’s better to have fewer accounts, so you’re spending more time and energy on 1-2 accounts. Keep it simple.
Everyone hates that. We see why it is overrated. However, there are certain trends and songs and it is smart to pay attention to certain trends that are popping on Reels. It can help you get seen.
We are not the biggest fans of pointing Reels, but they are easy to create and we watch them. Even though they might annoy you a little bit are you still consuming that content? That is something to pay attention to.
Underrated. People are more likely to linger on a post and engage if you create posts with carousels. It gets them to consume and engage with your content more.
Not a curated feed and not putting so much work in it and having it be more fun again? Instagram should be fun and creating more authentic content is underrated.
Underrated, you need to caption every single story. Half the time or most of the time you are watching your stories on silent. Think about it if you are in a grocery store or in line at Starbucks. Any situation where you are scrolling but you don’t want your phone to make sound, but you’re still scrolling through stories.
The auto-generating captions people have to wait and read while you continue talking. You want to type the caption so people can consume and click through. Most don’t have the patience for auto-generated captions.
Overrated. There is false information out there. Saves are really good but so are likes and comments and shares. The saves are not the new thing on Instagram. They are valuable for having people being able to come back and reread your content but they are not the holy grail.
Absolutely. Very underrated. That is the one thing on the algorithm that shows that people are enjoying your content and will push it out to more people. Inviting people into CTA’s (call to action) is very important.
Overrated as FRICK.
Underrated, do it. If you have been here for any amount of time you know that speaking to the camera is necessary. Absolutely vital.
Overrated. People focus on it too much. Your follower account is not everything. The power of Instagram is underrated for your business but it is not the only tool for marketing. It also does not determine your success. Having the follower count next to your name is highly overrated and people focus on it too much. It leads to self-doubt, comparison and it leads you to think that your life is dictated by a number next to your name and it is not.
Underrated. If you can, do it. It’s a HUGE engagement booster. People sometimes underestimate how important stories are. In reality, what’s the first thing you click on when you pop onto Instagram? Exactly.
Instagram first started as an uncurated, real-life social app. Then curated feeds became a big deal. And now, we’re back to uncurated, real life. Curation has gone out the window with Reels and Tik Tok. People are feeling more refreshed with unfiltered photos and real life.
Underrated. Highly. So powerful. Now with the new introduction of rooms and how you can have up to four people in your lives. It gives you a good exposure when you go live with someone else and pushing yourself out to their audience.
This is more in the influencer space. It depends on who doing it and how they are doing it. Are they doing it in an authentic fun relatable way? It could go both ways. If people love your style and you know people are following you for that then you are almost shopping for them in a way.
We don’t have an issue with product hauls, we’d say they are properly rated but maybe a little underrated.
It’s hard not to. There are only so many ways. It goes back to knowing how to tell a story and engage your audience.
Overrated but it is also hard to avoid it.
Underrated. Your engagement will never be higher when you do a Q&A. People are going to continue to watch your stories if they know what to expect. If you set the premise, it engages people, and they will be looking for your stories now. You’re consistently posting throughout the day and every time someone logs in your stories are going to be popping up.
