Have you ever struggled with your skincare routine or even lifestyle as a whole when it comes to the whole “healthy” or “clean living” world?? Let’s face it, “clean living” can feel overwhelming at times. There’s a lot of information out there and sometimes it can feel like a DRAMATIC life change that feels daunting.
If you’re feeling that way, or even if you’ve ever been curious about clean skincare and adopting a healthier lifestyle… you’re in the right place for today’s earbud treat!
Today we have the joy of talking to the incredible Bethany McDaniel.
In today’s conversation, Bethany talks about her story as a startup founder, busts a bunch of myths about healthy lifestyles and clean skincare, a few tangible and actionable steps for anyone to take who’s wanting to get into more clean products and living, and SO much more. Bethany is an absolute gem to talk to and has such real, relatable, and helpful info and steps for you to implement.
Having used all sorts of harsh prescription creams and pills to treat her acne as a teenager and young adult (and dealing with red, raw, irritated skin as a result), Bethany McDaniel was blown away by the effects she eventually experienced after ditching the harsh chemicals and replacing them with simple and natural ingredients. Bethany’s journey inspired her to start Primally Pure (with an initial $250 order for ingredients + supplies) to help others experience the benefits of using clean products. In addition to spending time at the PP Workshop and Spa envisioning new product ideas, Bethany is passionate about all things faith, clean living and biohacking.
It’s dependent on personality types. Some people are able to overhaul their diet in a day or a week. That can be super helpful with acne, but most people do better slowly implementing when it comes to lifestyle changes. Any little change you are making is going to have a positive impact. While a lot of times getting to the end result is a long journey, every single step that someone takes is going to make a difference.
Our skin is connected to our whole body. It is one of our organs, so our internal health is going to affect appearance of our skin. It is an inside and outside approach. The products of Primally Pure are simple real ingredients, rather than toxic ones. There’s a lot that people can do with the ingredients they have in their kitchen as well, if they don’t have the means to buy and swap out all their products.
Product-wise one recommendation for acne would be to ditch your conventional cleanser and switch over to the oil cleansing method. It will give you that deep clean without compromising your skin’s natural moisture barrier.
In terms of lifestyle, diet is an important place to start. Ditching refined sugar is a good place to start and avoid industrial seed oils (sunflower, vegetable, canola, etc.).
Get outside and take a walk or move in some way first thing in the morning. Not only do you get the benefits of movement and increased circulation, but going outside and getting sunlight first thing in the morning will set your circadian rhythm in a positive way so that right when you wake up and you go outside your body knows it’s morning time. By the time night falls your body will be ready to go to sleep because it was exposed to that natural sunlight first thing.
For people who struggle to fit something in, a jade roller is going to provide a lot of benefits. It’s so easy, there is a technique but even if you don’t know what you are doing, just rolling it across your skin (especially if you have it in the fridge or freezer prior) will help boost circulation. PP’s roller has ridges that provide more texture when you are rolling, which boosts circulation. Circulation is huge for any skin condition. Getting blood to your skin and surface does so many great things.
Gua sha does require more of a technique, it’s not difficult it just takes time to learn it and practice it yourself. It takes more time to do it properly. It’s pretty dramatic what it can do for your skin if you do it daily or a couple of times a week. It provides you with lymphatic drainage.
Using non-toxic products doesn’t really matter. Yes, there are toxic ingredients in products but it’s such a small amount, it’s not really that big of a deal. It’s not making us sicker.
Yes, using a facewash with toxic ingredients, once or twice or even over a course of a couple of months, it’s probably fine. Our bodies are smart and know how to detox, but the problem is we are so inundated with toxins in our current environments. The environments we are living in, the air we breathe, the water we drink, and the products we use. All of that looks very different from our grandparents and great-grandparents. It’s why diseases have skyrocketed in the last few years, it’s not that our genes have changed. Our genetics have not dramatically changed over the course of the last 100 years. Our environment is significantly different. There are a lot of things that are out of our control but there are a lot of things that are in our control.
It’s estimated that the average woman applies 168 different chemicals to her body every single day. What most people don’t know is that there are 1,000s ingredients in the market for skincare and the majority have never been tested for safety. We can’t assume that just because a product is on the shelf that it’s been made proven to be safe. It’s quite the opposite.

Things to avoid:
Fragrances is a blanket term and there can be 1,000 different ingredients. By avoiding fragrance you can avoid a lot of chemicals.
Deodorant: is the first product that Bethany made. Is an important thing to switch right away. We don’t want to get in the way of the process of sweating and getting rid of toxins but covering it up with more toxins.
Cleansing Oil: can make a huge difference in your skin health.
Everything Spring: You can use it as a toner every day, but can also use it for a lot of different things. You can spray it on your bikini line, as it’s really good for preventing ingrown hairs.
Dry Shampoo: will save you a lot of time.
