Calling all entrepreneurs and/or humans who have ever dreamed of becoming a business owner or entrepreneur someday!
If you’ve ever felt like “Man, I just wish someone would hand me a cheat sheet to the things I should learn or keep in mind on this journey…”. Well… the cheat sheet has arrived.
Today we’re sharing lessons we’ve learned from our years in business. Some of these we’ve learned the hard way (YIKES) and others, by the grace and goodness of God, He has led us to discover the easy way at just the right time.
If we could sit down together and share our top 10 things that we wish every entrepreneur could know before they start their journey and what we would’ve LOVED to have at the start of our journeys. It’s this list in today’s episode.
We hope this episode shares encouragement, guidance, and truth, as we all navigate through this entrepreneurial journey together.
Starting off with some logistics you don’t wanna hear but you need to. If you’re committed to making your business legit and not just a side hobby you do occasionally, then register your biz as an LLC or as a sole proprietorship. For more info on that specifically go check out Episode 023 with lawyer Paige Griffith.
Separating your business finances from your personal finances is smart and will help with taxes and everything from the beginning.
It can be SO easy to just focus on the fun, creative side of things when starting your business. Especially for creative entrepreneurs.
Don’t ignore finances. Read the book Profit First. (Ep. 61) as well as books like Rich Dad Poor Dad, Financial Peace, etc. Get a QuickBooks account. LEARN how to read your profit and loss statements. Learn how to make wise, financial decisions when it comes to your business. Get a financial advisor to help you make wise futuristic decisions for your finances and investments.
Talking to YOU multi-passionate entrepreneurs! If you have 5 million dreams you want to do, that’s AWESOME. Don’t do them all at once. Start with ONE thing you’re passionate about and want to cultivate or start and get really good at building that before moving on to something new, pivoting, or splitting your business focus to multiple things.
No one successful began once they had ALL their ducks in a row. They just started. Where they were. With what they had.
We had MAYBE 2-3 years of photo business experience before starting The Heart University. God doesn’t call the qualified. He qualifies the called.
Make sure you know WHY you’re doing something not just doing it for the sake of doing it.
Example: is your financial goal $100,000? Why? Do you actually need or want that? What is that goal ultimately aligned with?
Weekly or monthly as well as annually. Have a big picture vision for not just your business but also YOU. Your life. Your family. Your purpose. Are your business decisions aligned with that??
For example, if your goal is to create a life you love that allows you to have the freedom to be with your family or financial provision to go on trips etc. but then you’re working 24/7 and stressed. Are you actually aligned with your entire WHY behind what you’re doing?
Entrepreneurship can be SO lonely if you let it be. Reach out and connect with other small business owners. Be intentional about cultivating friendships with other entrepreneurs. Network and go to things where you can meet other business owners like conferences, workshops, courses with Facebook groups, meetups, etc.
One of the biggest roadblocks for ANY human is the fear of other people’s opinions. This is really big, especially in the creative entrepreneur space. You’re putting your heart and soul into this, and it can really sting when people don’t understand or don’t see the value or dream.
So don’t let that fear hold you back. Stay LOCKED on the voices that DO matter in your life. Listen to advice and counsel from trusted people, but unless they have that stamp of authority in your life put on noise-canceling headphones and DO YOUR THING.
Hustle seasons, rest seasons and push/pull. God uses seasons throughout everything around us. The hustle should never be non stop and the rest should not be laziness.
Be careful to avoid burnout. Just because there is a free day in your calendar with no “booking” or “meeting” on it, that does NOT always mean you are free. Recognize what season you’re in and cultivate it.
Every time we are pursuing Jesus our businesses flourish. Every time we begin to try to take control and do things in our own way things get hairy and stressful and difficult.
If you’re a believer, the wisest business strategy decision you can EVER make is to invite the Lord into the CEO seat. Pursue HIM before any and every decision. Ask His input. Dream with God. He has EVERYTHING you need to find peace, joy, success, and purpose in what you’re doing.
