Today’s episode is for all our photographers out there!! Today we have the incredible Cassidy Lynne on the show chatting about ALL things photography.
We polled YOU – our podcast listeners – in our Heart & Hustle Facebook group to get these questions for Cassidy and you DELIVERED THE GOODS!! Cassidy answered questions like: how do you brand your photography business to stand out from the competition? And How do you break into the destination photography industry? As well as how to set up a successful styled shoot and the breakdown of her entire client workflow from start to finish.
It’s a meaty episode and we know you’re gonna walk away with LOADS of info, so bring a notebook!
Cassidy Lynne is a matcha-addicted wedding photographer turned educator from Grand Rapids, Michigan. She teaches photographers how to build their business from the ground up and that’s exactly what we’re gonna tackle today: a photography-intensive deep dive!
That is the question of the game, how do you differentiate yourself from others? Rather than just another photographer.
Your brand is YOU. A lot of people underestimate the power of being yourself in your business. People think when creating a brand, they need to post all the same things everyone else does but if you’re doing the same thing as everyone else. Your potential clients are going to view you like everyone else.
Building your brand presence on social media is huge and will help differentiate you from other people because you are being yourself. A lot of photographers try to create this brand that is wedding or lifestyle photography, but you are the person that is creating the images. When you focus on the YOU aspect that is huge in creating a brand that sets you apart.
Cassidy’s first travel wedding was someone local to her that wanted her to travel with them. This is typically how it happens. Someone finds you locally and then wants to bring you with them somewhere. From there you are advertising that you are traveling and then people are willing to fly you places.
Word of mouth referrals within your area and working on connection and relationship building. The more someone feels connected with you, they will do whatever it takes to have you on their wedding day or session.
For advertising and marketing, it’s important to be a broken record. Constantly reminding people that you book travel, create a bucket list of places you want to travel to, or if you have a budget to do so, travel to one of the places you want to shoot at. Then show that you’ve been there or book people while you are there.
Nine times out of ten it is not an editing funk but a shooting funk. When you find yourself in this editing funk, it feels more like a shooting thing. You have to look past the edit and look at the photo. Editing funks start with first evaluating your photos, and looking to see how your photos match up to what you are going for. If you want a certain vibe, you have to shoot the vibe first.
If it truly is an editing funk, take the time to learn Lightroom. Learn the things that make edits good, so then you can go and tweak the current edit you have or make a good base.
Finding a base preset that is the vibe you are going for will help. Using a base present wil help jumpstart you in the right direction to get that vibe, but at the same time, you want to learn and understand it too.
When you are putting the word out to other photographers, you need credibility. Doing a shoot similar to what you are planning but doing it by yourself is one way to get credibility. Having the experience of putting together a shoot like this or any other styled shoots in the past.
Advertise your vision and what is going to be included. People look for something legit, that there is a plan for models, and looks, and know what the day will look like. You have to take charge. Don’t wait for people to ask questions, answer them before they even have them.
Even if two or three people attend, it is worth it. The first shoot you do, if you get even one person, it’s so worth it. You are creating a connection and relationship with them and you’re getting content. Setup a styled shoot that you are wanting to photograph whether or not people will buy tickets.
Tip: be so clear with your communication with your vendors and attendees.
