Today’s episode is something near and dear to our hearts. It comes from a super personal place to us, and we’ve gotten a lot of questions about this specific topic. But we also want to acknowledge that this episode won’t necessarily be a perfect fit for everyone and we wanna say upfront: you are welcome here. Regardless of whether you believe in God (and therefore what we’re about to share) or not, you are welcome. If this episode doesn’t quite hit home for you, zero worries! We hope you can still glean something from it, or maybe just join us on the next episode.
Sharing our faith and how God has changed our lives and businesses is a topic impossible for us to NOT share. So if you’ve been around The Heart University (or this podcast) community for any length of time, you know God is a huge part of our lives & businesses.
Because of that, when asked what our number one piece of business advice is, one of our top answers is always: make God your CEO. Invite the Holy Spirit to be in the head chair. To steer the ship.
But as we’ve shared over the years, we’ve gotten a lot of specific questions of “How?” What does it mean to bring God into your business? What are some practical ways to implement that as a believer? When we say God is the CEO, what does that actually look like?
So today, we wanted to share our personal perspectives and experiences on every single one of those questions.
If you’ve listened to literally more than like 2 of our past episodes, follow us at all, or know us even a little bit, you PROBABLY know we are believers. While this podcast and our company aren’t solely Christian… we DEFINITELY don’t hide it and we believe wholeheartedly in believers going out into the world in EVERY sphere of life, and standing firm and bold for the Lord. We believe in bringing the kingdom of heaven into every aspect of life, not just keeping it segregated into a nice little faith box only to be let out on Sunday morning.
We’ve been very vocal about how we let the Lord into our businesses, let HIM lead us in our lives, and for us, He is VERY much a part of our businesses.
Before we go further, we have an episode very similar to this topic that we highly recommend listening to if you haven’t:
Ep 40: How We Integrate our Faith into Our Business
God calls us as Christians to go out into the world, using our gifts and talents to literally change the world, declaring His name. He calls us to bring people to HIM. To be disciples of nations. If we truly believe the way, the truth, and the life is ONLY found through knowing and believing in Jesus Christ. We need to take up that great commission and spread His name into all 7 spheres of influence.
That obviously applies to everyone, not just business owners. But you’ll notice business is one of the 7 spheres.
And like we said, incorporating the Lord into your business doesn’t mean just posting a bible verse on the wall of your brick-and-mortar store or a social media post and calling it a day. It goes so much deeper than that.
So that’s what we’re about to break down. How WE incorporate the Lord into our businesses, making Him as we like to call- our co-CEO.
Remember: you are a STEWARD.
Anything you have is God’s. Any finances, any time, any other blessings, are all from God’s hand. So when you go to make decisions, ask the One who knows everything. The one who is eager to see you living in the fullness of Him and bringing His kingdom to earth.
Also… God created the whole freaking universe.
He is the master Creator. The Master Businessman. The King of all Kings. How could we NOT want Him to be our CEO?????????
We’re gonna dive into some of our top practical tips for inviting God into the CEO seat. But if you wanna dive in even deeper on this topic, one of our favorite books (that we both repeat read every single year) is Dreaming with God by Bill Johnson. Another AMAZING book is Doing Business God’s Way by Dennis Peacocke.
Less of a business tip and more of a lifestyle altering. You can’t start a business with Elon Musk without having a relationship with him. You can’t bring God into your CEO seat and be able to hear his voice without spending time building that relationship and practice in hearing His voice. Spend time with the Lord. Stop viewing Him as a distant omniscient being and as a close, intimate friend. READ the WORD, meditate on the word, and talk to Him. Journal your thoughts or prayers.
Prayer is SO SO SO powerful. People typically think of prayer in life as “oh please bless this food, my day, help me to not get sick, etc…” But prayer especially in your business is life-changing. Bring Him INTO your business decisions through prayer. Start your days with prayer, start your meetings with prayer, pray for your clients before you meet with them, ask God to give you revelation.
Practice hearing His voice. Ask God questions and make space without distractions. Everyone hears from God differently. Whether thats through pictures, dreams, words/thoughts that is something that wouldn’t naturally come from you, something in you spirit that jumps that is different from when you’re just thinking, signs, and words from other believers.
Pray for your employees or contractors, and ask God to BLESS them. Do prayer walks, we learned about this from the book: The Circle Maker by Mark Batterson. We highly recommend as it has transformed our prayer life.
We set aside time every year, every quarter, every month, and every week to sit down with Jesus and review all of our goals, our tasks, our worries, our dreams–everything. We simply take time to say “God what do you think?” and make space to listen and learn.
Before sitting down with pen and paper to really “strategize” with Jesus, we take time to shake off all distractions and really focus on Him. That looks like worship, prayer, journaling, etc. Shutting off all distractions and locking eyes with the Father.
When you sit down to dream with God, ask Him specific questions:
It’s a RELATIONSHIP. We couldn’t run a business with each other without having a relationship/friendship beforehand. When it comes time to make big business decisions, we hop on a call with together. When we’re feeling frustrated or confused, we hop on a call with together. When we’re excited, we hop on a call with together.
View God as your business partner who happens to be freaking BRILLIANT.
