We’re talking about a lot of spicy things today that you’re going to want to know to get our customers to open your emails. Whether or not you have an active email list or you’re thinking about having an email list, you don’t want to miss this episode!
Also, there are a lot of good nuggets in here even if you don’t have an email list. Great marketing tips all around for ya!
1. Avoid Spam Triggers
Avoid all caps. Don’t use a lot of punctuation like !!!! Avoid spam words like “free, guarantee, bonus, discount, and sale. Adding too many symbols, emojis, or links can look like spam. Use your own domain email, not Gmail.
2. Utilize hooks via the subject line
The first 5 words need catchy and intriguing – something they can see on their phone at a glance and go “What?!?”
Examples:
- We almost pooped our pants (and you might too)…
- Goodbye forever… (talking about/freebie how to overcome burnout)
- Want to 10x your bookings? Open now.
- “Lindsey, stop f-ing around” (using first names)
3. Utilize preview text
A great way to add to the subject line and continue to catch their attention.
Examples:
- Subject: We almost pooped our pants (and you might too)…
Preview text: The Heart Workshop is coming to….
- Subject Line: From $3k to $18k months – Learn how Danielle transformed her business with The Heart Workshop!
Preview text: && this could literally be YOU.
4. Short and to the point:
We have way too much going on around us today. WAY too many marketing emails, social ads, friend’s posts, etc to consume in a day. Your emails cannot be another place to put a blog post. Your emails need to be short, concise, and to the point. A great rule of thumb is “Can they read it in line at Starbucks while waiting for their coffee?” If not, shorten it up!!!
5. Break up blocks of text
DO NOT have long, flowing, walls of text in an email. Not only should it be short, but you should separate your text into easily digestible chunks. Emphasize the most important sentence by putting it all on its own. Maybe even bold it. Utilize emojis to help emphasize a link or a key point.
Any block of text, we will get overwhelmed. And I will not read it. Well maybe for Taylor Swift, but you are not Taylor Swift.
6. Utilize storytelling and emotion
People LOVE stories. Facts tell stories SELL. Utilize stories, emotions, and casual PERSONAL brand voice in your emails.
For example: “Can I tell you a embarrassing story?…. One time I ___, ____, ____…. And it almost ruined me. And I need to make sure you don’t make the same mistake..” Like BAM attention is held. I need to hear more of this story, I need to know the results.
Just because it’s an email format doesn’t mean it suddenly needs to be a corporate robot voice. If you’d say crap or dang, SAY IT IN THE EMAIL.
Example: we put things like “hella” and “poop” in our emails
7. Keep it simple – plain text
Visual example: when your friend or mom emails you what does it look like? Now… when JCPenny or Kohls emails you… what do the emails look like? Plain text like a friend is emailing you. Not a JCPenny catalog with graphics and colors.
Caveat 1: feel free to include GIFs or a photo of yourself, etc.
Caveat 2: newsletters can be different.
