If you’re currently a stay-at-home mom (or want to be one soon) and have been debating starting a business to help support that dream… today’s episode is for you!!!
Today we’re chatting with the incredible Maddy Spranger, one of our very own Heart and Hustle podcast listeners. Maddy is a 28-year-old wife and mother as well as a virtual assistant who embarked on her entrepreneurial journey just last year while juggling the very full plate that belongs to a stay-at-home mom.
In this episode, Maddy shared a deep dive into her journey and all the lessons she learned. She shares the process of deciding to start a business while being a stay-at-home mom, how she juggles the demands of motherhood and entrepreneurship, and, she shared some great tips for all the moms out there who aspire to kickstart their careers as virtual assistants.
Maddy’s Story
My name is Maddy Spranger! I am 28 years old, married with three kids. I am the owner of Spranger VA Solutions, I do Executive Assistant work and Social Media Management. I started my business in November of 2022. In my free time, I am a middle school youth leader, I love to bake and make sourdough bread and do fun sporty activities!
What made you want to start something on the side while being a SAHM?
When Maddy started her business, her youngest was 9 months old. When she started having kids, she wanted to be a stay-at-home mom. Unfortunately, her personality does not like to sit still. For the last five years, she has dabbled in so many different side hustles. Her friend asked her if she had looked into being a virtual assistant. She had a friend who was a bookkeeper and needed a virtual assistant. Maddy had her friend set her up with a client management software system and got everything up and running in less than a week. Google Virtual Assistant, it’s an umbrella for many different things and is a low-cost startup.
Mom guilt
Maddy says her husband is the teacher to her. She loves a clean kitchen, an empty sink, and a clean house. But there comes a point where there will always be dishes, there will always be laundry and your house will always be dirty. There will always be more. Maddy is okay with doing the best that she can at that moment. Are you going to let that stuff get in the way?
There are bigger things. You can’t do it all. Sometimes she knows that work does have to stop and she needs to help my kids.
What it looks like in a day
When Maddy first started, in the first six months she was hustling. She was able to get six clients in three months. She would wake up early around 5 am and then her kids would wake up around 6-6:30 am. Then mornings are for her kids, then she gets all her kids to go down for a nap or quiet time. Maddy has found writing things down for her top priorities helps keep her on task. Maddy would write every priority down for her six clients and then in the afternoon, she would just get going.
The first steps to becoming a VA
First, go Google it. Or you can use ChatGPT. Ask GPT how to become a VA. Look for different things that would work for your niche. If you can answer emails you can be a VA. As long as you are willing to learn how someone wants it their way, you can be a VA.
Open a business account, first and foremost. Make a Google email account. You can have a client software system. You can also use a Google spreadsheet, that will work just fine.
