Today is the treat for you today. We’re having the incredible Kristin Hubbard!
We know her because she was the DJ for our past conferences. Today’s conversation is about how she built her DJ business, how she markets being a DJ, becoming a serial entrepreneur. We talk about marketing, building a brand, whether you are a DJ or not or in the event industry or not.
Kristin’s Story
Kristin is known for her energetic hosting skills paired with her music programming and mixing talent, which has been showcased at conferences to luxury events, and weddings. One of the most sought-after female DJs and entrepreneurs in the country, Kristin has rocked with over 1000+ clients and continues to wow her clients and audiences every time she steps behind the mixer. She’s vivacious and takes command of any event by bringing energy through her music and hosting skills from the DJ booth.
Outside of rocking dancefloors, she is the host of the Love Lead Excel Podcast and loving what she does and leading by example, she is passionate about educating and sharing experiences on unfiltered business, music industry and life podcast.. Partnering with brands like WeddingPro, Perfect Wedding Guide, The Bridal Society, Disc Jockey News, DJ Times, and QSC, Kristin is working to help others excel forward in all areas of business and life.
She is highly sought after in the event industry as “someone you need to know,” and continues to expand both businesses through constant recruiting and training, seamless operations, and a laser focus on sales management and leadership.
Personally, she is a Believer with a lion’s heart, a dash of sass, a perfectly organized ‘real life’ Barbie dream townhouse, always up for an adventure, a playlist for every occasion kinda girl, who loves to travel… but not as much as I love making memories with the people I love. (ask me about my polaroids, mixtiles and memory books).
And somewhere in the middle of all of those worlds, her passion for music metamorphosed into her first debut country album ‘Heartbound’.
Are you the only DJ or do you have multiple for your company?
It started with an event where she didn’t think she could load everything, so she asked a friend to help. Again, Kristin just asking a question exposed her friend to this world and she loved it. And that’s how it started having multiple DJs. How she taught her was her coming to every event and watching Kristin. Kristin started documenting her entire life and process of DJing and that’s how she started building her company with multiple DJs.
Pandemic Details
Kristin was waiting for someone to announce something on the news. Then saw there was going to be a shutdown. She heard that, sent an IAM to my team, and said I need you to embrace for impact. In three hours I watched 400 events disappear off the calendar and 500k of revenue get deleted. The emotional impact on so many levels on what one newscast did and the aftermath after that, don’t even explain the next 12 months.
Marketing Talk
Kristin first started as her name for the business and then had to transition to Our DJ Rocks. There are clients that you have to convince they need a DJ, then you have clients you need to convince that they want you and then you have clients that will change their wedding date to have you.
What is the biggest lesson you have learned in business?
It’s never going to hurt revenue to lead and make decisions with grace included.
Is there a favorite book you’ve read recently?
